I clean my primer pockets, there was a time I didn't...It's six of one half dozen of another, does it really matter...no...it doesn't. I also think making a distinction between handloader and reloader is absolutely foolish...somebody has way too much time on their hands...LOL

yeah I dont get that comment either. reloading for my 9mm for plinking, using range brass with a volume charge of powder and checking the charge and OAL every 25 is just a bit different than spending hours on just the case prep alone for precision long range rifle handloads.

reloading for range work vs handloading for sd/hd or precision shooting are entirely different endeavors. as mentioned previously, when handgun reloading for 5-8 yard range work, any time I waste on pocket cleaning and other handloading steps that are unnecessary for the application could and should be spent at the range if the intent of reloading this ammo to begin with is to become a better shooter.

Indeed. There is definately a distinction between the two terms. Why this is such a intimidating distinction, I will never know.
If I shovel the snow from my walk, but only go down to three inches above the ground because that allows free passage and my neighbor shovels his walk all the way down to the ground, have we both equally shoveled our walks?

When I first started reloading, I didn't clean the primer pockets - that's the way I was taught by my buddy who introduced me to reloading (he also didn't clean his brass). All went well for years, until I had a couple primer pockets so dirty I couldn't get the primer seated flush. No big deal - I put on my eye and ear protection and ran it through the sizing/decapping die.

Since that time - years ago - I generally clean the primer pockets every time I reload...except for the times I don't, usually when I'm putting together some plinking ammo. I've had people tell me that I'm not a "handloader" if I don't clean the primer pockets, uniform the primer pocket, deburr the flash hole and trim the case to length every time I reload. I doesn't matter to me what they think, they aren't the ones I'm reloading for.

And what is the problem with folks telling you are not a handloader but a reloader? There is a distinction! Why is that such a problem for folks? It's not a judgemental label, it's a distinction of the depth of case and component preparation! Nothing more! OH LORDY! :rolleyes

I see...

you suggest there is distinction...I don't find that intimidating...Just because there is flexibility to a given activity doesn't necessarily mean that we need to immediately start drawing distinctions...I for one happen to think we are drawing lines where they really don't need to be...

Shoveling snow is shoveling snow. Some shovelers are just a bit more thorough...of course the guy with flames painted on his shovel is obviously a speed shoveler...

What if...I'm the handloader who also reloads or a reloader who also handloads?

Then it would stand to reason that...

If I'm in reloader mode then I'm not cleaning the primer pockets.

If I'm in handloader mode then I'm cleaning the primer pockets...

And...If I wear a beret while performing any of the above...I'm an artist...
