| 480 Ruger reloading tips
Hello everyone, I am sick of spending big bucks on rounds from Hornady and Buffalo Bore so I picked up the dies to add to my loading bench. My question to those who reload for this and I guess the 475 lindbaugh since it is practically the same is what powders, bullet weights, primers, etc have you found to be the best combos for you?
What I have is a box of xtps in 325 and 400? I believe at 50 counts each. I think I already have large magnum primers by CCI and H110 amongst other powders.
As for shooting this lovely round, it has been part of my collection for a few years but I just got into shooting it. I am looking to add it to my firearms for hunting deer. I am not accurate enough with it to take it but am planning on a lot of practice this year.
Any help is appreciated.

I'd pick up the lastest Hornady Reloading manual. There is a section on the Ruger 480 with XTP bullets. Hope that helps .

Richard Lee's "Modern Reloading" also has .480 Ruger data, as does Lyman's 49th Edition.
As for which loads will be best, that really depends on your individual gun. Based on my experience with hot .45 Colt loads, you may find loads in the 35,000 PSI range to be very nice and very effective. Everything I shoot is cast boolits, BTW, without lead-fouling. Might save you some $$.

Thanks for the replies. I already have the Lee book as well as a hornady (not latest but the one before the latest). I use these books plus those I can get online to compare and start loads. I like to see others notes to get an idea what has worked well. This round never made it to many guns so I like to see any other info that I can.
As far as what I load, I have loading 9mm and .40. I am about 4k rounds in so I am green but enjoying making and shooting my own.

I like Speer 325g FP bulets.
And on the Allianr site there are loads for 300-MP.
You will get a bit more ummf than with H110.
It is an easy round to load for... just get a firm crimp.
I have the Horn 4 Die set with a seperate crimping die and i like it a lot.
Other than that have fun

Thanks for the reply Temmi. How did you land on the Speer 325gr bullet? I like the Hornady XTP but figured I would try anything else that people have had good results with. For a die set I did pick up the Hornady 4 die. Do you find the crimp from that die set to be too weak?

| 275 gn Mountain Mold
I have a 275 grain bullet from Mountain Mold. I designed it with help from MM's program. It shoots straight and hard. I use W/W immediately cooled from the mold. I have a 7.5" barrrel, use H110 35.1 grains, hornady brass, fed mag primers. I get 1610 fps and approximately 2" groups at 100 yds. I like it. I have a Ruger Alaskan grip, also had a smith do sum trigger work. I love it. For fun and plinking I shoot Lee molded 325 grain bullets, over Lil gun, 1000 fps.

Thanks for the input Ginkus. I have always wanted to dabble with casting but currently the wife would cut me a new one if I add anything else to my already large pile of hobbies.
What is the difference from the Alaskan grip compared to the standard SRH two toned grip? As a side note I have a pachmayr on my contender and am not sold on it enough to put one on my SRH.

Personally i think that H110 would make a killer deer load (or anything else you didn't wany around for long) with some cast boolits. There is a great selection of commercial cast .475 boolits already for the Linebaugh guns out there from companies like LBT and many others so you don't have to get into casting just yet. A heavy cast boolit will make a wonderful deer load at very low pressures compared to a jacketed bullet which is easier on the person and the gun. Remember to use only magnum primers with H110 and not to reduce below 3% of maximum.
Near as i can tell Hogdon's website lists 18.5 gr of H110 for the 400 gr XTP for 1200fps. Handloads.com gives 17.0 under a 400 LBT WFN cast boolit for 1000fps. I'd be willing to bet that load fould shoot through an elk in any direction.

So far I've used 400gr SWC bullets dropped from a Lee mould with a shade over 17gr of 2400 in Speer brass. Pretty accurate with mild recoil.
I have a 325gr mould as well, but haven't had time to try those out yet.
The most recent Lyman Handgun reloading manual has more 480 reloading data (in fact a 3-4 page article on the 480) than any other non-internet source that I've seen so far.
H110 and 396 are supposed to give the best velocities in this cartridge.

I haven't experimented much with my 480 I got some 412gr Hunter hard cast LFN from Midway and loaded them with 20.0 of ww296. I'm getting 1320 fps from my 9 1/2" SRH and good accuracy out to 100 yards.

I have used both (or at least my oldest son has) on hogs with no real difference.
BUT
Alliant has loads for 300MP which runs the bullets a bit faster at the same pressures.
Using the Hornady 4 die set, I have not had any problem with the crimp so far.
What problem do you see?
