Guys I have loaded at least 250 rounds of 308 hornady 165 SST's, 168 Amax, and 168 sierra matchking BTHP's, each for my semi's. Half of the amounts are using W748 powder the other half with Varget with identical loads so the only difference will be the bullets. Just wondering what you have had the best accuracy with? I have tremendous accuracy with the factory federal gold medal match sierra's in 168gr sub moa at 100yds, so I decided to load for it to try to increase my accuracy and cut down on Factory cost. I have also loaded the same amount for my Garand with the same bullets in 30-06 to see what it likes as well. What are your thoughts?
My experience shows that 168gr SMK and AMAX shoot the same.
I seat my SMKs to around 2.800" OAL and my AMAX to 2.815" OAL. Both shoot the same velocity with same powder charge and are about equally accurate out to 600 yards.
I have since switched to 175gr SMKs though... 175gr with 45gr of varget and right at the lands yeilds well over 2800fps w/o pressure signs out of my 10FP and is accurate.
I use 175 grain SMK and Varget for my 700p. I get the best results with that combo. I used to shoot the 168's but I also chose to step up to the 175's. Reloading your own rifle bullets for accuracy is a fun part of the hobby. I enjoy the reloading part just the same as the shooting part.
I like the reloading as well, its a great satisfaction seeing what you have made work perfectly and the self worth that goes along with it. I have my Burris eliminator set up for 168 smk on my 24" DPMS LR308 I built, but if I can get tighter groups with it or my M1 garand or M1A scout I would make the switch and re calibrate it.
