I own a Ruger SB in 44 Magnum, with a 10 inch barrel.

any suggestion on loads that take full advantage
of that length?
I tend to prefer heavier bullets.

My .44 is a 9 1/2" SRH. I had great luck with 23.5gr of H110 and a 250gr Keith bullet
Or a 300gr Speer SP and 22.5gr (max. load)
Good luck and tell us what you find.

.44s with long pipes seem to like IMR4227.

Fixing to try H110 and the 240gr XTP in my 8 and 3/8 model 29 smith. Try to let you know what becomes of it.

firescout will become famous soon enough
I use W296 (sister powder to H-110) in both 5 1/2" Redhawk and 20" Marlin levergun .44 Mag loads. 2400 could work well, too.

The H110 and Hornady 240gr XTP shot really well 2 to 3 inch max groups at 25 yards. Good enough for headshots on silhouette targets. Gonna stick with it from now own.

I use 4227 under my 250gr Keith cast boolits out of my 20" Rossi '92. Load works great with tight SD and ES. Accurate as heck out to 100 yards.

Take Care

Bob

An article by Brian Perce in this months Handloader Magazine reviews the new 300MP powder from Alliant, and it looks especially interesting for longer barrelled guns as it's slower even than H110. I may pick some up someday, but right now I have alot of loads with H110 and Ramshot Enforcer I need to chrony to finish working up to a velocity I like.

Just bought a new chrony yesterday (my third). I don't think I'll shoot 44 mag loads through this one double action!

What velocity and bullets are you working up to?

Lefty,

1367 ft/sec is about as high as I want (or need) to go in a 629 Classic with a 6 1/2" barrel with 240gr. XTP's (H110 powder). My CCI primers start getting too flat for my comfort zone after that. Pretty much the same with 300gr. XTP's at 1200 ft/sec in the same gun. Using the "push-thru" method to determine chamber size, my 629 Classic has .429 throats, so the .430 size XTP's may be generating higher pressures as they're squeezed down a bit.

I've got a Ruger Super Redhawk with throats a little over .430 that I've got 250gr 429421 (Lyman Kieth Style) semi-wadcutters loaded for, plus some 310gr Lee LFNGC loaded for; both sized at .430. These are loaded incrementally with H110 and Enforcer to max loads, but I haven't got to shoot over a chrony yet, or check for pressure.

I usually work up to max in my guns shooting over a chrony (with handgun rounds), then back up and shoot for accuracy once I know the guns limits. With rifle loads, I just target shoot over the chrony from a rest to get the best groups, and if the velocity isn't where I want it, switch powder.
