I personally am tired of all the people who say GUNS KILL PEOPLE. If they want to ban something then ban the AUTOMOBILES WITH DRUNK DRIVERS that kill hundreds of thousands more people than guns so I am a proud member and supporter of the NRA and don't mind telling people how I feel about the Second Amendment.
I did not create the avatar but I certainly adopted it and use it on all forums of which I am a member.

I just ordered 158 gr missour bullet so really want to try them they are the 18 bhn by the way, I really liked the trail boss powder. Sorry for the long post. | Took the time this AM to load up some TB loads and went to the range. I was getting velocities from 640 fps to 740 fps with loads of 3.7g to 4.4g. Wow, what's this? I was asking. Far less than 1000 fps. I get home and pull out my old data sheets. When I look closer, I see that those higher velocities were not in my BH but in my Rossi 92 lever gun with 20" bbl Big difference there!
So, I apologize for the mistake on my part, but I still had fun this AM. I also found that the new HBWC that are BH 12 shoot real nice in the BH and I got ZERO leading after about 50 rounds. I'm happy!

Walt | newtmaker,
You just saved me the trip to my range to varify that my listed velocities were correct...
I too have made that mistake with certain rounds as I have a Model 1894C in 357 Magnum...
I have all my data on a spreadsheet and when I want look something up, I have it filter by cartridge and the by weapon! That elimates either the Security-Six or the Marlin depending on what I am looking for.
Those velocites are a bit closer to what I was getting...

Hodgdon data is only listing 825+ for the 158 grainer and I am sure they are stretching it a bit and they don't list barrel length...
Newtmaker indicates much greater velocity with a shorter barrel and a boolit that only weighs 15 grains less. Can't figure that out...
Maybe my Chrony is goofy, but I don't think so as it is "right near the book" when it comes to other loads in my 357 and 45 Colt. That is with Trail Boss and other powders...

I have no idea what the velocity is, but I would think based on the Hodgdon data, that it is around 800 fps. My biggest thing is that it has less recoil than some factory .38 ammo in the same gun. I would like to chrono some of my trail boss loads to see exactly how fast the lead is moving.

I get 1080fps with 12 gr of 2400 with a 180 Hornady xtp setting on top of it in my gp 100 357 mag. It has a 6 inch barrel. With 158 gr Hornady xtp and 12.5 gr of 2400 I get 1150 fps thru my chron. I have some Trail Boss I have been planning to try in the 38 and 357. For light loads the Trail boss should work great. I really like the fact , that the case will be full. Will not have to worry about double charge. I will post my chron results in the next couple of weeks.

I just fired a few of the 358429's that I mentioned in a previous post, and the numbers that I list remain proven by my Chrony yesterday...
I don't think I could get near 800 fps with Trail Boss and the 358429 in my Security-Six...
I did shoot some RCBS 38-148-WC's yesterday also. Velocities will be in my next post...

Yesterday I shot some RCBS 38-148-WC’s from my Security-Six using Trail Boss powder.
The results:
3.5 grains—703 fps
4.0 grains—751 fps
4.5 grains—778 fps
I seated the boolit to just be crimped in the groove approximately 1/8 inch from the front driving band. I could have seated the boolit a bit less deep and got more space for a greater charge of Trail Boss…
With that process, I might have been able to get 800 fps, but the WC is much shorter and has less weight than a 158 grain any type of boolit. The design of the full WC’er would allow more Trail Boss and possible a greater velocity…
I can’t get 800 fps with the 358429. At least not with a recommended maximum load using the 70% formula.
I may try the RCBS 38-158-SWC next. This will be the true test if I can get the 800 fps—maybe this will be the one?...

I was taught that case volume is what an empty case can hold while case capacity is what a case can hold with a properly seated bullet. The Hodgdon/IMR load formula for Trail boss figures starting loads @ 70% of case capacity. In other words, 7/10s of the way to the base of the seated bullet. Loading to the base of the bullet, they consider 100%.

Just got back from my range and I was shooting the RCBS 38-158-SWC (166 grains when checked and lubed) in my Security-Six using Trail Boss and a CCI-500 primer…
The results:
4.0 grains—676 fps
4.5 grains—745 fps
5.0 grains—766 fps
Five grains was the maximum load as calculated using the 70% formula…
Still can’t reach that 800 fps mark with my Security-Six…
And so it goes…BCB

I am always amazed at how something as simple as the 70% formula (the link has been posted dozens of times) can be so damn difficult to interpret...
Still people what to fill cases to the case mouth and then do the 70% reduction...
I am beginning to wonder if this powder should have ever been put on the market since some of the data can be calculated by the reloader...
Yet, I almost doubt that too much of it could be put in a case and cause a catastrophe, unless extremely compressed. PLEASE DON'T QUOTE ME ON THAT!!!!!...
Good-luck...BCB
