Ruger Blackhawk 32-20 Win Reloads

Gentlemen, A good friend of mine passed on, and I inherited some of his reloads. I have 50 rounds of 32-20 Win loaded with 10 grs. of 2400 powder under 115 gr laser cast bullet. I cannot find any reloading data to reflect this load. Should I pull them?

That would be a hot, and possibly unsafe, load for most older Colt or S&W .32-20 revolvers, but the Blackhawk should be able withstand it, as the .30 Carbine Blackhawk can handle even full GI loads which are considerably hotter. 2400 is a very poor propellant choice for reloading a .32-20. The .32-20 is at its best with modest charges of faster powders like Bullseye. My standard load is 3.5 grains of Bullseye and a 100 grain cast lead .312 bullet, MV is about 1000 ft/sec from a 6" revolver.

Personally, I would pull the bullets and reload them with a more appropriate propellant.

I use that exact reload recipe for my wife's Marlin 1894CL in 32-20. It comes out ~1650 FPS MV out of her 20 inch barreled rifle and is very accurate. I don't own a 32-20 Blackhawk but I do own a couple Uberti SAA 32-20 Colt clones and an original S&W Mod 1902 in 32-20. I load them with 7.5 grains of A2400 which works well with them. Hope this info helps.

The only data offered showed 1650fps in a rifle. SWAG would tell me that same round should hit 1200fps in a revolver. Might not blow it up, but would stretch the hell out of it. That 7.5gr load should get to about 950fps in a revolver, which is still too stout in my opinion for an older 32-20.

I grew up shooting 32-20. It was usually a mouse fart. That load seems way over for a safe test.

There is no way I would risk one of my 32-20 revolvers and my health for $20 worth of ammo.

I am not a conservative shooter. I take risks that I can calculate and build up to. The most I would do is to pull a bullet and reload with a minimum starting load of that same powder and chrono the shot. Someone must have told you what their "guess" was for the load or it was handmarked on the box.

Handloads.com shows that same 115gr bullet with 7.3gr load of 2400 going 1280fps in a Marlin 1894.

Please rethink your plan to shoot a couple. It only takes one to blow that cylinder into pieces. Last year I blew up my Super Blackhawk using factory rounds and that event will change your shooting forever.

It is not a risk worth taking.

I went a bit over that but it was in a TC Contender.
