454 Casull bullet question

Hi all. Specifics:

Ruger Alaskan, 33-34 grs of LilGun (I know, it destroys the gun), loads form Hodgdon Manual.

Can I replace the FA 240 gr bullet with a Hornady XTP/MAG when using starting loads? How much of a difference are there between the two bullets? Same weight, same dimensions (.452).

If not, I may have a bunch of XTPs for trade!

Thanks!

There is a difference in bullet metals be it cast or jacket and you should always us the correct data for the products you are using! Cast bullets will most always create lower pressure then jacket. Also not all jacketed bullets will give the same pressures either. Some jackets are rather thin metal and some are quite thick giving widely different pressure curves. With starting loads you are probably just fine? If it were me I would not be afraid to run starting loads. However you can just go to Hornady's website and look up the data you want for free and be sure of what you got! Also as a side note LiL gun is less abusive to your gun if you run heavier bullets like 300gn cast or jacketed. I would also recommend using H110 over LiL gun if you can find some and just use the LiL gun for low end plinking loads till it's gone. I have run a few pound of Lil gun and have never been happy with the results, H110 is by far the best. I have been reloading and casting way over 30 years now and H110 is hands down my first choice for any magnum in my lineup with the acceptation of Unique for low power plinker loads for the wife. Lastly if you do a lot of reloading and have multiple calibers I highly recommend a subscription to Load data .com. You will find all the data you want and then some, you can also print the data and put it in 3 ring binders and unlike some sites Load data only uses published data from all the top companies, no home recipes!

Thanks for the input. I am not a member of Loaddata, but I think I might become one!

Did notice one curious thing, though. Hodgdon (online) lists no loads at all for a Hornady 240gr XTP/MAG, (just FA and 240 GR. SIE JHC); but loaddata lists five (5) from Hodgdon? Would these loads be ones from older manuals? The wonderfully confusing world of reloading!

BTW, I have reloaded and molded for years, but only 357, 45 ACP and 45 Colt. A lot less confusing and TONS of loads everywhere! The 454 seems to be "hyper-specific". For instance, my old Hodgdon manual says: 240 gr JHP, 14-16.5 of Unique. But then it says, "Use maximum loads only with Freedom Arms bullets." So I assume I could use 14-15 grains of Unique with an XTP/MAG. (Hence my original question). Hmmm.

Be sure to watch your O.A.L.
If I'm not mistaken, Hornady uses slightly shorter cases for most of their XTP rounds.
This affects seating depth when using other cases.
