Clays powder question...

Anyone else who uses Clays notice the powder from the factory seems different lately? I have some older Clays from several years ago and it meters pretty good (not great but good). My new stuff bought recently meters HORRIBLE... nothing like the older lots of Clays I have.

Anyone else notice this?

I don't use Clays, but I would contact Hodgdon. They have always been very helpful when I asked questions.

I've got Clays in my hopper right now. I have not used older Clays so I can't compare.

I have noticed that it is not metering well compared to my other powders. I have had trouble trying to keep it a consistent weight. Swings of .1g are acceptable but not good. This Clays variance was more like .2g

I did the cleaning routine and no help. I'm now twice as careful about recalibrating every 10 rounds with the Clays.

The video clip below is an interview with Chris Hodgdon a year ago that covers a lot of powder issues and announcements. The main discussion about Clays begins at 14:25.

To deal with 2013's pistol and shotshell powder issues related to their production in Australia (ie fire destroying the plant, shipping issues) production of Clays was shifted from Australia to Canada.

Chris Hodgdon states that there is, at that time, a bulk density problem. The powder is fine, but the weight per unit volume had increased. Not much of an issue for pistol users who at least test weigh what their PM throws, but certainly a potential issue for those who use bushings, dippers, or don't check thrown weights at least after a batch change.

The interview covers some things about other powders that may be interesting to you, if one year old.
