Bullets

I have a Mini 14-223/5.56 581 Ser. and have just Started reloading and was told to try Heavier Bullets for Better Groups. reloaded 55 gr sierra SPBT blitz kings with25.1 748 and CCI primers. grouped well but was low at about 50 yds.
Can I shoot those 69-77 gr bullets , i believe it has a 1 in 9" twist

If that was done with iron sights, you have a good group with that load. I would just adjust the sights to raise the group . You can try the heavier bullets and see if they will group better.

I agree with HBK. Just adjust your sights and zero the rifle with that load. The heavy bullets were developed for shooters wanting to use the AR-15 in competition at 600yds. They usually require a 1:7" twist for best results and are more costly than lighter projectiles. The 1:9" twist is optimized for 62gr bullets like military M855 green tips, but those are not known for great accuracy. I think your choice of 55gr bullets is fine for shooting out to a few hundred yards. That's where the Mini-14 shines anyway. If you're getting good function in your rifle, the only thing to change is the zero on your sights.

One...Iron sights or scope? If that's iron, that's not bad.
Two...Good solid rest?

If you look at Shilens barrel chart a 1-9 twist in .224 can handle up to a 70gr bullet.

With load development I'm never concerned where the POI is, my only concern is if its grouping or not, sights can be adjusted. There are other things you can do other than going heavier bullet wise.

You can,

Switch powders.......
Switch bullet brand.....
Switch primer brand....
Tinker with your charge......
Tinker with seating depth.....

I don't know if you're new to reloading or new to reloading for that particular gun, but what you're going to find out is what load shoots deadnuts on in your buddies gun , may be a total disappointment in yours. Guns are like women, they all like something different.

What you've go looks good though........if I were you I'd start making .10 grain changes to my charge, above and below the charge you are using now provided its still within the safe data range for your caliber and see if that will tighten things up a bit.

Just my thoughts on the matter
