How do faster powders like AA9 or 2400 work in the blackhawk with lighter loads? I have been shooting 110 grain with fairly stout loads of 4227 and H110 that work well in my rifles, and give good accuracy with the Blackhawk. But with 4227 there is unburned powder left in the cases. Anyone care to share a pet load for AA9 or 2400? Load them light or heavy? Can't find much data on those powders for the sixgun.

So what do you want to do with it? For many years I shot CAS with a pair of .30 Carbine Blackhawks. I used 110 grain cast lead .309 bullets and 3.7 grains of either Bullseye or AA #2 which produced around 1000 ft/sec MV in my Rugers, and that's what you need for CAS. At least for me, I have absolutely ZERO interest in using GI-level loads in mine. Far too loud and muzzle blast made them uncomfortable for me to shoot much. My sincere recommendation is that for fun shooting of the Blackhawk, load the .30 Carbine to .32-20 levels.

Thanks, DWalt, for your illuminating comments. So, much faster powders than 2400 or Accurate9 will work in the 30 Carbine Blackhawk. Hmm. I have some SR7625,which is the fastest I have right now. But no data for guidance. I just want a mild load for target practice that is accurate. So far my best groups have been with near max H110, and near starting with Imr4227 loads listed for the rifle, both of which create a lot of sound and fury. and a full case of powder. You are talking much faster powders and plenty of air space in the case. I hoped this would be simple. but the data is sparse, and so many possible choices...plenty of work to be done yet.

There is little difference in capacities and dimensions between the .32-20 and the .30 Carbine cases, and any load recipes for the .32-20 (of course with .308" bullets) will perform well in .30 Carbine cases as mild loads for the .30 Carbine Blackhawk revolver. Of course, such relatively pipsqueak loads will not function the action of a Carbine, but you can always function the action by hand if you choose.

I do not wholeheartily recommend use of IMR4227 or H4227 in a .30 Carbine. The recommended load from manuals is 14.5 grains of 4227 with a 110 grain FMJ bullet. However, that will pretty much fill the case to the top, and you will have a compressed load with the bullet seated. I have chronographed the MV of such loads from a carbine and they are typically around 1750-1800 ft/sec, a bit on the slow side. Not too bad, but ejection tends to be sluggish. At least in my Carbine, the fired cases tend to fall pretty close to my feet, not entirely bad to minimize case loss, but I also have occasionally experienced failures to eject. I believe the best full-power propellant for the .30 Carbine, if to to be fired in a Carbine, is H110. 2400 is my second choice. I do not have, or need, a third choice.
