416 Ruger and RL 15 Powder

Hi

I am presently working on load development for my 416 Ruger using Hawk 300 grain spitzer bullet. I did find a few loads from this site.
http://1587510142.rsc.cdn77.org/RRoo...DATAKKempa.pdf

So far Hodgdon BLC2 is promising but several articles have mentioned that RL 15 really shines in the Ruger. I can find data for 400 grain and 350 grain bullets but none for the 300 grain.

Is RL 15 not adequate for the 300 grain bullet - does anyone have Quick Load that could indicate its use?

Thanks

Robert

I use RL15 in .375 with 250, and 270 grain, no help with the .416. Try looking at Load Data same folks who do Wolf publishing, that put out Handloader and Rifle magazine, you get one free look.

Thanks for replying

Thanks for your suggestion. The load data site has data for the 416 Taylor and a 300 grain bullet using RL 15 which several articles suggested could be used for the 416 Ruger because of similar case capacity. There are data for the 416 Ruger in my Lyman and Hornady manuals for RL 15 but for 400 grain bullets. Nosler also provides data for RL 15 but again with 400 grain bullet.

This site http://1587510142.rsc.cdn77.org/RRoo...DATAKKempa.pdf provides data for RL 15 for 350 grain bullet and one bullet tested was a Hawk 350 grain with a maximum of 78.5 grains.

And this site Wildcatting the .375 Ruger the author used published starting loads for the .416 Remington Magnum in developing loads for 416 Ruger. He basically said the case capacity difference was in the neck and to subtract 5 grains.

The Lyman manual has starting loads of RL 15 for the Barnes 325 grain bullet and based on the above article guidance that would be 75 to 83 grains. I did find one load on handloader for a 300 grain bullet at 76 grains RL 15 but a note on the bottom said it was unconfirmed.

I added RL 15 powder to the bottom of the neck in the Ruger case and came up with a capacity of 83 grains of RL 15 which for a 300 grain bullet would not be a compressed load. I then placed 77 grains in the case and it was about 95% full. All indications are that it should work.

RX15

Just took a look, Lyman 49th list a 325 Barnes X with RX15, no one list a lighter bullet for the 416 Remington.

300 grain

There are a few manufacturers Barnes, Perigrine, Hawk and GS. I was going to order the GS but you have to purchase them from South Africa. Apparently they are not available in the USA at this present time. The Hawk bullet is advertised as being +/- 0.5 grains and the statistics I ran showed a mean of 299, std. dev. 0.4, min of 298 and max of 299 for N of 50 which is pretty consistent. I was a little disappointed that Barnes does not provide any data in their reloading tables.
