buck460XVR, You're right! Most burn rate charts rate Lil'Gun a tad slower than H-110 or W-296 but all charts seem to have these three powders clustered one after another. Hodgdon doesn't make any powder but they do put their name on H-110 and Lil'Gun plus they distribute W-296 so I would have to believe them. Another good resource is the Hornady reloading manual where all loads are listed in order of burn rate. As you look at different cartridge/bullet weight combinations, sometimes Lil'Gun is slightly faster .... sometimes slightly slower than H-110 or W-296. As I mentioned above, every powder tends to take on a different personality with different cartridges and bullet weights.

I just ran a chart for a 44 Mag in Quickload using a max load out of the Hornady manual .... 22.2gr Lil'Gun with a 240gr XTP. Some interesting data. First, chamber pressure peaks at a mere 23k psi (36k is SAAMI max). Only 80.86% of the powder burns in a 6" barrel. It would take a 14.8" barrel to get a 100% burn. It takes the bullet .8 milliseconds (.0008 seconds) to travel 6". Granted, .8ms is pretty fast but you must admit .... gun barrels don't get hot by just looking at them. All barrels will get hot when live ammo is fired .... no matter what the powder's burn rate. This load develops about 1325 fps in a 6" barrel.

Here's a comparison for the same cartridge and bullet only with a mid-burn rate powder .... 9.5gr of Unique generates the same chamber pressure (23k psi), gets a 100% burn in 2.7" of bullet travel. It takes about .83 ms to travel 6". This load develops about 1000 fps in a 6" barrel.

When you look at these two radically different burn rate powders in the same cartridge with the same bullet .... what stands out is .... Lil'Gun is still burning strong when the bullet exits the barrel whereas Unique burned up totally in just 2.7" of bullet travel. So .... we are back to the old "time versus temperature" hat trick. For all practical purposes, the time in bore is about the same with both powders but when powder continues to burn for more than twice as long and more than twice the bullet travel, I think we now know why Lil"Gun makes the barrel hotter. As you noted, H-110 and W-296 should heat up the barrel about the same.

Here's an industry standard burn rate chart .... not put out by any specific brand: http://rugerforum.net/library/7664-s...ate-chart.html

Link works but only if you have enough posts to access the forum Library. I think it is 10 posts.

Well, I have about 12 lbs of the stuff, used to have a 410 and 28 gauge, I was reading on another much older post that if using a heavier bullet in 44 Mag with Lil Gun, it would hit hottest before the forcing cone? Helping to rid the problem of erosion to the cone. Is this not true??

And yes, lil gun is bada$$ in .410!! I used to love it, also heard of 300 black out guys using it...

The Hodgdon loading data shows loads for Lil Gun in 32 H&R Magnum, 327 Federal Magnum, 38 Super, 357 Magnum, 41 Remington Magnum, 44 Remington Magnum, 45 Colt(Ruger Blackhawk Loads only),454 Casual, 460 S&W Magnum, 480 Ruger, 500 S&W Magnum. That is eleven different caliber's
So far it has performed great in 32 H&R Magnum for me with both the 85 & 100 Gr JHP's.

Yeap you need to throw that powder away or better yet send it to me. I'll use it my 300 blackout rifle.

I'm a big fan of lil gun in my RARR 300 blk. tried 4 other powders nothing is as accurate.
Also had good luck in 327 FM. I have a fresh 8 lb jug, but if you need to get rid of those 12 pounds let me know. we might be able to work something out.

I use Lil Gun in carbines, don't shoot much pistol other than my 12" Contender barrels. I use it in 22 Hornet, 218 Bee, 221 Fireball and 357 Magnum. I may try it in my 44 Magnums at some point in the future. I just moved a couple of months ago, no longer have access to my friend's 1,000 yard range. I live in the asphalt jungle now. When/if I get things sorted out I will join a club. I need to shoot some of my stash so I have an excuse to hide out in my loading room.

I have used it 357 magnum and 44 magnum full power loads. It worked great in the 357 and OK in 44. I also use it in 28 gauge 7/8 loads. It is not real versatile but works good in what its meant for, mag pistol and small gauge shotgun loads in my case. I don't shoot enough maximum pistol loads to worry about heat and gas cutting.
