I intend to try centrefire rifle hunter class metal silhouette target shooting. The targets used in this discipline are metal cut-outs in the shape of animals (chickens, pigs, turkeys and rams) A steel stand is set into the ground and the targets placed on it. There are 10targets at each distance in two banks of five. In the centrefire matches, chickens are placed at 200m, pigs at 300m, turkeys at 385m and rams at 500m. You shoot from a standing position with no support not even a sling. Question what type of load/bullet weight (308)would I need to have sufficient knock down power for the ram at 500m ? Cheers |

Don't quote me on this but I would think any 150 grain load with any kind of azz behind it would knock it down.

Many long range shooters prefer the 168 gr match grade bullets because they have exceptional ballistic coefficients. The extra weight improves momentum, which helps knock down those rams. One of the best bullets for rifle silhouette is the Hornady 168 gr A-Max. It has a BC of .475, which is quite good for a 30 cal. When loaded to the factory velocity of 2680 fps, it will still retain 77% of the muzzle momentum (60.6 @ muz, 47.1 @ 500 yds) .... more than enough to topple a ram. It's easy to see why this is the preferred load for snipers.

You might want to try 168 match and if you plan on reloading, take a hard look at Berger bullets also. |
