Range review: Colonial Shooting Academy, Richmond, VA

For you fellow Virginians out there, I wanted to report on the facilities at Colonial Shooting Academy in Richmond.

It is a new facility, only about a year old. The gun store area was well stocked with ammo, handguns and long guns. The store area is about the size of what you would see in the gun dept at Bass Pro, perhaps a bit larger. Prices were what you would expect to see at the LGS. They have lots of clothing, accessories and reloading supplies as well. They also have a gunsmith on site.

If you're hungry, they have a cafe that has snacks and sandwiches at a good price.

Before shooting, you will have to watch a 15 minute video concerning safety and the range rules. When you fill out your paperwork, you will be quizzed on the video by an employee of the range. I didn't mind it at all. They then issue you a safety card that is good for a year.

The range itself is pristine, clean and climate controlled. The range officers are very friendly and helpful. They even sweep up your ejected brass while you are reloading. They do ask at first if you want to keep it. No guesswork is required when setting the distance on your target. You punch in the setting digitally and it sets to the exact distance. I was very impressed.

The hourly rate is pricey at $20/hr but you can bring your own ammo and targets. Memberships are available and I'm going to join. If you shoot twice a month it pays for itself.

Overall, it was a great experience and I would recommend paying them a visit.

On recent visit to my daughters and families in Richmond, one of my Son-in-Laws took me to shoot pistols at this facility. Just as you described, wonderful place and fun events all the time. I would definitely join if I lived in the area.

A happy member of CSA

I started shooting in January and I was coming to Colonial Shooting Academy a couple of times a month to try out new guns. After getting my first pistol I started going more often. I'm now a member and recommend any of you who are in the Richmond or Virginia Beach/Norfolk area to check it out. They are opening a new facility in Va Beach in a few weeks. They have members only range time on Sat and Sun from 9a-11a. A great way to start the day.

Great review, Hokieman. Sometime in late April there's a brand new, state-of-the-art, 26,000 square foot shooting facility, which will include 6,000 square feet of retail. It will have 19 handgun lanes, 6 rifle lanes, a training center, cafe, two event Sky Decks, a conference room and a luxury club level lounge for VIP members. And, it's only 6 miles from my front door. I'm looking forward to checking it out. Your review makes me even more anxious.
