First range visit with Mini 14 Tactical #5819

As I reported yesterday, I am a very happy new owner of Mini 14 SS Tactical (model 5819). After searching for many months I came upon a brand new Mini 14 in the model I was eagerly seeking. Yesterday night I went through the rifle with a routine field strip and clean to get familiar with it. The rifle was in mint condition and everything looked good.

This morning it was off to the LGS range to put a few rounds through it. I fumbled with loading the clip a tad but soon found the approach to angle that puppy in smoothly. I put through 60 rounds on the indoor 50 yard range. All 60 fed through the Mini without a hiccup leaving the action open on each empty clip. The brass ejects briskly with some real force on this gun. But I inspected the used brass and all was well. No unusual dings or crimps.

The first 20 rounds was just getting the feel of the Mini and getting used to sighting in the target on the iron sights. Once I found the appropriate angle to peer down the sights, I was able to cluster some great shots (for my experience level ). My last 20 were really nice. Only one stay shot. I have to say with a scope this rifle could easily be accurate enough for my use. Maybe the 50 yards is too close and giving me false confidence, but I'm really happy with this rifle.

After 60 rounds the gun was toasty and the fresh new oil was cooking ever so slightly. I enjoy that smell and the feeling of breaking in a new firearm. I also enjoyed some of the attention I was receving at the range. For a rifle that has been around for such a long time I was surprised at all the folks that had no idea what it was and the interest it generated.

Overall a great trip to the range. The Mini performed flawlessly and was more accurate than I had hoped (in my hands anyway). I think this Mini is a keeper that will see plenty of use. No safe queen here.

Here is a pic of my last target:

Please...it's a magazine.

Welcome to the Mini-14 family. I love my Ranch Rifle. That's a pretty good group - don't worry about the flyer.

LOL..pardon my lack of proper terminology. I know that lots of folks find that upsetting. I would find it upsetting as well if I wasn't so happy with this new Mini at the moment. I suppose it's just too many Hollywood movies in my 47 years and much deprogramming is still required

I'd edit my post so as not to offend future readers, but I wouldn't want your post to look silly

Hey, mdzcpa I see nothing wrong with your range report, you are simply a new owner of a Mini-14 who was excited about just how well your rifle shot and handled! By the way nice grouping there on your target!! No offense to me I see nothing upsetting at all & you do not need to be deprogramed!! Nice range report enjoy your Mini-14, I see you are a fairly new member here welcome to the Ruger Forum:

At 50 yds, mine are usually under a quarter-dollar coin.

But as the carbine heats up, then they spread, as with any gun.

My first 2 groups on this target are at 50 yards to BZO the scope.

The rest are at 100 yds and they spread from there as the barrel warms up.

Congratulations mdczpa. Glad you are so excited about the rifle and how it shoots. In these days of so much negativity, it is great to see someone post a thread that is positive. Thanks for sharing.

I have a model 5819 on order , will pick it up in a couple days . Retired from Ky Corrections which utilizes mini 14 rifles for the last thirty years or more with good
service.
