Beretta .380

i took my walking buddy to the range for the second time Thursday and he is enjoying shooting. He brings a little nickle-plated old as Beretta .380 with him that I think is a mod84 or similar. The first time it shot just OK, but this time he had inexpensive steel-case ammo. I brought my SR9c and 2245 with a red dot for him (and I) to enjoy.

He fired a couple of rounds and stared getting failure to feed, failure to fire and extreme difficulty to ejecting live rounds after failure to fire. Thinking it was the ammo not the pistol, I looked at the rounds that didn't fire, and the firing pin dimpled the primer on several rounds.

I field stripped and look to find it was dirty, ran a patch through it and wiped it down without a thorough clean and reassembled. The slide worked slick and this is when I realized the chamber didn't like the steel case ammo. So I loaded a round in the magazine, inserted, pullled the slide back, released and it went forward. Pulled the trigger...nada. Waited. Slide difficult to pull back.

Not having any experience with steel case ammo, and ready posts on RF from users who seem to have no problems I had diffficulty in believing the feeding problem was the steel case/chamber fit. There lies our problem. I don't think the little pistol is the problem and all it needs is a good, thorough cleaning.

Any ideas?

I would recommend a good cleaning and trying some other ammo before making any conclusions.

Russian steel case ammo often has harder primer which could lead to failure to fire

Give it a thorough cleaning - pay attention to under the extractor and the firing pin channel.

Try some good brass cased .380 (American Eagle, Speer Lawman, PPU, Perfecta, Fiocchi or S&B tend to be off the shelf favorites) and see if that fixes the problem.

I've never tried steel case ammo in my Beretta 84F, but it has been completely faultless with everything I've shot in it.

Thanks, I'll help him clean throughly and pass along the suggestion to try different ammo.
