After months of reviews, videos and test shooting many pistols; I ended up back with a Ruger to replace my LCR for my primary carry pistol.
I love 1911 pistols, and my favorite is my SR1911; chosen not because it was a Ruger, but because it gave me the most features per dollar of all the 1911's I looked at.
Because of this, I wanted something concealable, reliable, affordable and not too hard to disassemble (arthritis) that worked similar to a 1911 for a CCW.
My new Ruger American Compact fits the bill beautifully. I picked it up for $400. This is by far the best trigger I have ever felt in a polymer handgun, and after about 400 rounds in a week, it has been flawless and more accurate than me. I have noticed some soreness in the web of my hand, and I have had some issues shooting left (me, not the gun; two other shooters have not noticed either). I believe I have solved both by changing to the large grip panel as I do have big hands. I had been playing around with all 3. Some of this may be fatigue, as I usually don't shoot nearly this often.
With that large grip panel, the gun shoots point to aim and my trigger finger falls right where it should. The safety (which I recommend as the trigger pull is short) is easy to reach and engages very positively.
I did not limit myself to Rugers, though the SR9C was in the hunt until the very end. The safety and the trigger were the deciding factors. I shot Glock's, M&P's, XDM's, Berretas and some I am forgetting. Is it the SAME as a 1911? NO. But it is as close as you can get in this price range and MUCH easier to break down and reassemble than any of the compact 1911 versions. I look forward to getting more time with this pistol.
