Dan Wesson CCO

Well, finally joined the 1911 club. The gun came in several days ago, but the weather's been pretty nasty here...

I stripped/cleaned the gun, then lubed it well with Weapon Shield and racked the slide 500 times. Took it to the range this morning to start it's 500 round break-in... Here's a couple pics:

My impressions:

To put it simply, this is the finest handgun I have ever owned.

The CCO is going to be my EDC. This is my first 1911, and I must admit I was a little nervous about making the transition from polymer/striker-fired pistols (XD). I've done massive research leading up to this purchase/transition, and knew that 1911's can be more challenging as far as reliability, keeping them running correctly, etc. Well, Dan Wesson has thoroughly dissolved all of those worries.

The fit/finish is absolutely flawless. The only guns I have ever seen that even come close are Ed Brown's, which is saying a lot, considering that they sell for nearly twice the price of my CCO. IMHO, Wilson, Nighthawk, etc, aren't even in the ball park...my CCO has better fit/finish hands down. I handled/priced all these guns before making my purchase. I definitely think I made the right choice in going w/Dan Wesson.

Accuracy was incredible... I warmed up with a couple mags slow-fire from 5 yards. My 1st shot was right through the X...

Keep in mind, before today, I'd only logged about 60 rounds through a 1911 in my entire life. I have absolutely zero experience with this platform as far as actually shooting. So, I moved back to 7 yards (a likely self-defense distance, IMO). the target pictured below are the first two mags I shot at 7 yds; they are all double-taps...(ignore the taped-over holes, those aren't my shots).

Needless to say, when I placed all 14 shots in the A-zone of the target, doing rapid-fire double taps, with a pistol-type I've never used before...I got really excited!! So THIS is why all the top shooters like 1911's the best!!! I have definitely seen the light.

To wrap up my report, function was great. As mentioned, I was a little nervous after hearing how "finicky" 1911's can be, etc, etc, etc... I put 200 rounds through my CCO today. (100 rounds = PMC 230 gr FMJ, and 100 = Blazer 230 gr FMJ) I kept the gun literally dripping wet with Weapon Shield. (which I have found is a fantastic clp!!!)

I only experienced one malfunction, a FTF, on the last round of a mag. So much for the "finicky" 1911...

So, I'm a little under 1/2 way through my break-in...gotta find some more .45 ACP, which is pretty tough to find here locally. I'll run 300 more rounds of FMJ through the gun, then try to find some HST or Gold Dot. If it'll run 150-200 rounds of carry ammo with no problems, then I've found my EDC partner for life!!

I'll post another range report once I finish the break-in. Great pistol so far...

Excellent! My cousin has the RZ10, nice gun and packs a punch. DWs seem to be more pretty than most other 1911s.

You have been reading too many of the opinions of Internet Experts. Was not necessary.
Did it hurt anything? No way. It did make it a lot messier than needed.

I like to use an Oil Bottle that has a very small tip, so that the "drop" of oil you get is MUCH smaller than you can normally get.
The one I use is:

(Sorry for the strange angle, but I cropped it out of another picture I have)

It allows you to lay a very small bead of oil in the rails. This will produce a small amount of "weeping" at the back of the slide when you hand cycle it ten or fifteen times. A small amount = correct amount of oil. Moderate amount = need less oil. LOT of weeping = take it apart and dry it off, start again. - - No weeping, you need to rethink gun lubrication.

The CCO was just coming out when I bought my CBOB. For the price difference I went with the CBOB. REALLY nice gun! Also very accurate.

Well grass-hoper, you are now addicted.
If your marriage survives, you will ony have three or four new 1911s in the next year.

you're right... like this guy, for instance : Lubricating the 1911 | Lubrication | Tactical Tips | Larry Vickers

figured after reading LV's advice, too much was better than not enough...especially since it was a brand new gun that hasn't loosened up any yet.

yep, the needle applicators are great...picked up a pen/needle of the Weaponshield too. that's what I'll use to lube it for carry. but for range/break-in, I figured "wetter was better".

I guess he spent a lot of time in acid rain.

I've yet to see water wash oil off of a metal surface, without adding soap or solvent.
