SR 1911 Weekend Project

I had these Houge wraparound wood grips on my new SR 1911 Commander. They were a bit slick with the fine finish. I decided on Saturday morning after a range session, to improve the grips in both "grip" and looks. I wanted a "personal" alteration.

I had a few extra personalized Golf Club markers that looked like they might work well. I took the grips to my machine shop and turned down the marker OD's to .750 and machined the back post to remove the golf club grip arrow point and shortened the length.

Then I made a fixture to affix the grips face-up and in a mirror position to one another. Over to mill and I bored a shallow (marker thickness + .020) .750 counter bore to inlet the markers at the midpoint and on centerline of the grip screws.

Back at my wood shop I laid out a simple 3.5:1 triangle checkering pattern (no curves), and this morning I started the checkering. Six hours later, I was able to put four coats of grip finish (quick drying) and buff them out. Then I inserted the markers after filing down a relief contour on the marker edge to bring that edge down on rear side of the grip. Set the marker and grip on a 5/8 diameter acrylic rod clamped in a vise and then peened over the marker's stud to lock it into the grip.

I decided to put the "new" grips on my full size SR 1911. Voila! The grips got a bit darker, which I like, and the addition of the checkering improves security/feel of the grip. I could have done a lot of other things this weekend, this seemed like the right thing to do at the time...

I attached a couple shots. Couldn't do more, not enough attachment space.

Good shooting everyone!

Thank you for the kind words. I'm still trying to figure out the attachment thing. Limited space, only two photos fit, so many pictures. I guess DropBox could work...for linking photos.

Have a great week!

I will make an attempt to post a couple more shots of the pistols and their "home", a two layer, four pistol case.

LAWMANGR:

The case was purchased from Amazon (who else?) it is:

Plano Protector Four Pistol Case
by Plano $17.89

I did customize it quite a bit. But the top layer is "Pluck-N-Place" foam cubes. I cut a thin plywood sheet to fit under the top layer to allow it to be lifted clear of the bottom layer. Then, I inset the pistol cleaning kit, knife case, SR 1911 tools, and silicone cleaning cloth.

I hope that helps.

Good Shooting, & hope you can find ammo...
