Already fell in love with my SR40c, got the bug now.
New project is this: I SHALL be buying a new MKIII stainless target. It just looks like tons of fun to shoot/plink. Then I'll be adding all the goodies as the budget permits. Pretty excited about the new weapon! As soon as I shot the SR40c, I knew I had to have another gun, and the MKIII is just calling me.
I know NOTHING, ZERO, NADDA about the MKIII add-ons!
Thoughts? Advice?

I have a Volquartsen Mark II hammer bushing, and the Volquartsen Mark II accurizing kit, stainless trigger version, in my Mark III Target. I did not use the VQ springs that came with the kit, as I was looking for a crisper trigger, but not lighter. I also have a homemade stainless LCR plug replacing the LCI.
The hammer bushing eliminates the magazine safety. The mag safety makes it more complicated to strip and reassemble the Mark III, and your mags won't "fall" out because of it. You have to pull them slightly.
The VQ kits improve the sloppy Ruger trigger play. You can do okay just buying a VQ trigger and sear, but the whole kit isn't much more in cost. You have to use a Mark II hammer bushing to use the Mark II kit in a Mark III, because the new hammer isn't relieved to fit around the mag safety.
Some people don't mind the LCI, but for me it's pointless, harder to clean, and seemed to cause me some feed problems. You can remove it and leave the slot open, but a plug is nicer.
There are several other hammer bushings available that give a tighter, more accurate fit. And, there are a few sources of ready-made LCI plugs. Other members will be better informed to link you to those, or a Search here should find more info.
Then there are loads of grips to choose from, and scopes/red dots/ reflex sights. Even custom open sights. I'm happy with original grips and sights on mine.
If you really get into modding a Mark III, you can spend lots of green.....

On ebay is a guy that can thread your stock barrrel for a supressor for about 100 to 150.
Take a look on youtube for supressed MKII and MKIII's
I just bought a supressor, waiting for the paperwork

I am a poor student, so I like to tinker with things to make them better before spending money on them. With that said, I decided to do some trigger work on my Mark III. I bought the gun used, but the guy said he had never had it apart. When I finally pulled it all apart, it looked like there was an over travel adjustment screw from the factory. I adjusted that, and also added a screw to take out the pre-travel. Then I polished all the internals (plunger, trigger bar, sear, hammer, etc) to a mirror shine. Other than changing the profile of the trigger, there is nothing about the volquartsen kit that can't be accomplished with a little time and careful use of some tools.
I will say that I do love the hogue grips I put on it. When I bought mine, they did not offer them for a III, only a II, so I had to do a little work to make them fit too. However, if that is still the case, very much worth the time to make them fit.

I haven't had any issues with the Mark III Hunter I got, but I added a magazine ejector from Volquartsen and a Volquartsen compensater, with a Simmons 2-6X32 scope on top. About 1000 rounds down the pipe, a real tack-driver. The LCI is not an issue for me, I've had no problems. |

| Laremm, is the guy an FFL holding gunsmith? I would always use a machinist at a local screw machine shop to do various gunsmithing tasks that either I didn't have the equipment or skill to do and I'd do the rest. I always made sure that I kept him legal in what he was doing. They got burned previously by making silencer internals that the buyer was assembling to his tubes. The Feds didn't like that too much.
When it came to work on MKI II or III pistols, barrel work meant my machinist had the gun/receiver which is illegal unless he's FFL'd or I stand by with my gun while he works on it. So be sure you don't get a guy and yourself in trouble by passing your "gun" to an unlicensed individual. Smithy.

Step one complete! MAN are MKIII's hard to find around here! I had no idea. Anyways, put a down payment on one, will be picking it up this week. I'm so excited. Stainless with the bull barrel, like this one:
Also put a down payment on a stainless Rossi 357. I like shiny stuff.
Can't wait to get my new MKIII to the range!

Enjoy. I have the same MKIII.
I had a few issues right at first with some gunk/burrs on internals. Once I cleaned everything inside/out I haven't had a single jam/misfire/anything! Great gun!
