GP 100 hammer & trigger swap?

I have a kaboomed 6" GP.100.
I also have a DAO 3" GP 100.
I would like to make the DAO SA/DA by swapping out the trigger groups. Is this a straight forward swap or are there deamons to be wary of?

Thank y'all in advance!

I did that very same swap with a couple of SP101'S. Just experimenting. If I remember, the hammer is the only thing that needed to be swapped.

You can likely get by with just swapping the hammer but it would be preferable to use the trigger as well. The single action notch on the hammer has likely worn in and matches the sear on the trigger. It would work with just the hammer but I think you'll get a better single action pull if you keep those two parts married. I wouldn't swap the entire trigger group, but rather remove the triggers and re-assemble the trigger group with the desired trigger.

If you've never disassembled a GP-100 trigger group, read up on it first. There are some small parts that can be launched and lost if you're not careful. Some people suggest doing the disassembly inside of a large clear plastic bag so that the parts can be contained.

I was at the range shooting .357 mag. loads. Round #48 blew the cylinder apart, bent the top strap, knocked off both front and rear sight and detonated the round in the adjacent cylinder. (There was only the last two rounds from the box in the cylinder.) No injuries.

After sending the gun to Ruger, I was told it was due to an overload and I could buy a replacement revolver at a discount. I passed.

Therefore, the thought to use the trigger group from the 6" kaboom to replace the trigger group in my SS 3" DAO.

Should be an easy and straightforward swap. Sorry about the kaboom!

Dang, sound violent. Glad everyone is okay. Sadly I dont have any insight for you, as my first gp100 is sitting at my ffl awaiting NICS now. Good luck on your project.

The sad part was, I had fired less than 500 rounds through the gun in total even though I had bought it about 5 years before.

If you look closely at the broken cylinder, it appears there may have been a crack that had been there before the kaboom. There appears to be a portion of the cylinder that is stained from the chamber side. Or it could be just my imagination.

Ruger says it was an overload. Maybe so. My 1969 4" Colt Python ate the same recipe from the same loading session on the same day without so much as a hiccup.

I believe I have bought my last Ruger firearm. Things within the company appear to have changed since Bill Ruger passed.
