I have some big ass hands myself and have to agree with rammerjammer on the P90. P90 was my favorite untill I got the SR1911.

The Model 21 is a great choice. Light weight, low recoil and EXTREMELY accurate. I carried one as a duty weapon for 10 years before retirement. My only complaints are that I never really trusted the trigger safety in some situations (Just a personal preference) and the fact that they are ugly and made of plastic. But they ARE tough. I let mine slip away back when I needed the money. The current owner still carries it daily as a primary duty weapon.
I don't like the Sigs at all. The have a weird twisting recoil. Personally I can't shoot them accurately. I own 3 Colt 1911s, a firestorm, a Rock Island Arms and a Springfield. Several Colt and Smith and Wesson Revolvers.
Looking forward to trying a new Ruger .45 soon.

Here's his "wish list":
- Full size. He has large bear-paw type hands.
- Range / Home Defense use only. We live in NJ, so there will be none of that CCW "nonsense"
- SA/DA if possible, but SAO is OK.
- Heavy. HEAVY. HEAVY. He wants something that shoots as softly as possible. Due to a disability, he basically shoots 1 handed. The more steel, the better. (Did I mention "heavy"?)
I've done some preliminary research, and found the CZ 97B and the Sig 220 so far.
Just so you know, his other gun is a Beretta PX4 Storm in 9mm, he has access to an Armalite AR 24, and an SR1911 for points of reference. We also rented a Beretta Cougar and a Kimber 1911 (not sure of the model) last time we were at the range. | Have him try a full sized Springfield XDm 45. I've had one for a couple of years and while I'm in a love affair with 4 1911's, my first true love was that XDm45. Extremely accurate, light recoil, great 3-dot sights (not all 3-dot's are created equal), amazing trigger, light, sharp, crisp and consistent trigger pull and short reset. It holds 13+1 has 3 safeties, trigger, striker blocker and grip. It was handgun of the year when it came out. Mine was all black, but I liked the bi-tone better and had the slide Cerakoted.
I have a Powder River Precision ultimate trigger kit in it and it shoots as nice as my 1911's. I've also put a stainless steel guide rod in it, which reduces snap even more. And if 14 rounds won't get it done, you can get +3 mag extenders that give you 16+1. Great for the range, but ridiculous to carry (the extended mags, that is) With the Crimson Trace Laserguard, it punches one ragged hole at 25 yards. I don't have a picture of that target, but below is it's little brother, my XDm9c 3.8 at 15 yards created the picture below. (No laser on the XDm9c, but I did have Trijicon HD night sights put on it)
EDIT: The CZ and Sig are both good guns, especially the CZ. Nothing wrong with the Sig, but it's got a DA/SA trigger that some people don't like. The XDm45 is SA only.
XDm45 4.5"
XDm9c 3.8 @ 15 yards"

How about a revolver? Smith & Wesson model 22, model of the 1917... .45 ACP with easy to reload moon clips. Big, heavy, easy to shoot. Though no slide to absorb some of the recoil. If recoil is a concern seriously check out the Glock. Though it is not heavy it is well designed in that respect.

I had a S&W 4566 which is SA/DA but sold it and bought a 4586 DAO. Both are 3rd gen solid steel pistols. My 4586 weighs 44 oz. loaded (8+1). They are no longer made but you can find a lot of police trade ins.

I would also look at the XDm 45 full size because of it's capacity and features. It's a big gun, you can even get a model with a 5.25" barrel. I have it's real little brother, the XDs and love it.
That being said, if I could only have one full size 45, it would be a 1911. (my SR1911 to be specific). Doesn't have that kind of capacity, but I love the feel of metal!
(edit: I've also shot a Sig P220, shot nice but din't fit me aesthetically)

I love mine and will never get rid of it. | Another vote for the P-90. I have two of them and will never part with either one. Also: In my experience, the Sig P220 absolutely SUCKS. I would only recommend it to someone I didn't like.

I had a CZ 97 I wish I had kept. If you run out of ammo it's big enought to use as a club .

Based on the criteria stated, either the CZ 97b or a Springfield Loaded 1911 would be a great choices IMHO. Both weigh in at about 40 oz and are relatively soft shooters in my experience due to their weight, design and all steel construction. The 97b is a double stack so it does have the advantage of an 10 round magazine and will be less expensive to purchase if money is a significant factor.

If you're thinking about the XDm45 or the Glock 21, here's a video by someone I really trust. He gives good honest advice and freely admits he's a Glock guy.
But watch this and see what he thinks! |
