it could be 22 short, some older guns like rg made 22short caliber handguns. i own a nef and it says 22lr on the barrel. i noticed on gun broker that the 22short guns have a much shorter cylinder than the regular 22lr at least in the rg brand they do. if 22lr will load and not stick out the end of the cylinder it is probably 22lr.

Any pics or model numbers? H&R made quite a few pistols over the years, even if you restrict the discussion to 22 pistols, only.

Thanks guys hope you can see the pic's had a hard time getting the print to show up.
the gun seems to have only been fired a few times like three and put away and forgotten about.
on the barrel the only thing that it says is Modle 949 22 cal. other than where it was made nothing else on the gun .

My old 9 shot H&R Sportsman says 22 long rifle on the barrel.
It is a double action center break |

I know is dates prior to about 1953 (I was 6) because I remember my father taking it up behind our house to and old quarry and shooting it. It was the first gun I ever shot.
The barrel is marked "H&R Sportsman" Double Action I think it may be a model 999. They were made back in the 30's.
The cylinder measures 1 1/4" front to rear |

Thanks Dave that's what this cylinder measures the same. So I'm sure it must be 22lr at least I shot it with them in it lol. Their really not that bad of a gun they seems to be made pretty well . Just can't seem to find much about them. it had been put up for who know how long . Had some trouble with it skipping rounds but took it apart and found someone had put the hammer spring in wrong . Now it seems to work great . Thanks for the help

Randy, when me and my brothers ventured out to go coon hunting as kids, a neighbor lent us an old H&R 22 similar to your 949 to use on coons (should we be lucky enough to tree one with the dogs). Those old H&Rs never got anyone to go ooh! and aah! like Colts or Rugers or Smiths, but they worked and did their job. Good basic shooters. Enjoy yours.

North country Gal lol yeah thats what I'm going to start using it for I coon hunt now and have been using my new Ruger single six and it was starting to get a little banged up. I think this H&R will do the trick . using rat shoot might be better in this H&R Too
Thanks

Wow! No kidding. Amazing how things go in such circles. Talk about bringing back memories. Yeah, no need to worry about the H&R getting banged up. Never was made to look at, but it will do the job.
Used to hunt rats down by the corn crib, too, but our favorite gun for that was a Savage 24 22LR/410. No missing with the 410. |

.22 Long Rifle, .22 Long, and .22 Short are all fine in that gun.
Just no Magnums.

Some fine dogs you have there. We used to run mostly Treeing Walkers, but also a Bluetick and B&T, now and then. When all the old coots that took us hunting discovered how well I could shoot a pistol, they gave the job to me. Dropped plenty of coons with that old H&R. Of course, had a lot steadier hands in those days. |
