I have this same model pistol and you can shoot the 22l or lr or short in it the only thing I have used in mine is the 22lr and 22 shot shells

I had a H&R 905 that I often miss. Swing out 9 shot cylinder, heavy 4 inch barrel, electroless nickel looked like stainless. It said "22LR". Fun and shot well, once I shortened the hammer spring by several coils. Original trigger pull seemed like maybe 30 pounds.......

Good photos of one here, expired auction:

I have the exact same gun you have in your picture, it is not the same as the typical "Sportsman" model that was much more prevalent at the time, I think ours is more attractive, looking more like a Blackhawk than the "Sportsman" model. Like yours mine is also stamped with the simple "Model 949 .22 cal" markings, like was already mentioned, it'll shoot shorts, longs & 22 long rifle ammunition. It 's a well built, sturdy gun and will easily handle the ultra high velocity Aguilla supermax ammo. It's also a pretty accurate shooter, I remember shooting bumble bees on clover flowers as a kid with my father! A fine little gun.

I inherited a Model 929 sidekick from my papaw, it was actually his truck gun and went everywhere with him, including being used in self defense (yes, a .22) when he was being jumped outside of a bar in the late 70s. Fired one shot, never even knew if he hit one of the attackers as he was pretty badly beaten, and they all hit the dirt and scattered immediately.

It rode in his glove box all the way til he was killed in an accident back in March of 2000, a constant companion. I tracked it down at a relatives house a few months back, and now she sits loaded with CCIs on my nightstand for my fiancée to use should the need arise (the 12 gauge is a bit much for her).

It's in beautiful shape and I still take it out with me from time to time; she's definitely not retired. I inherited a lot of his guns and have some of my own as well, but if push comes to shove this one means more to me than any of the others combined and it'll be by my side until I pass or pass it along to my boy one day (and he's only 7 months along still in his Momma's belly so I won't be parting with it any time soon LOL).

Anyway, sorry for the long response just had to share. Funny I came across this thread at the time I did, I just got woken up to a strange noise and the 929 came with me to check it out (all is well), and decided to browse the boards while my adrenaline shut off. Looking at it right this second and only for the first time noticed mine simply says 22 cal as well, guessing that means it will also fire shorts?
