| I Am Ruger Loyal, But I Strayed AGAIN Today
I have been a Ruger fan since the late 70s when I bought my first 10/22. In the late 80s I bought a stainless Mark II Target and a Super Redhawk. Here recently, I have been filling in all the guns Ive wanted, and dreamed of. I have wanted an SP101-22 but when I finally found one, I didnt fall in love with it, It just didnt look right to me, proportion wise. I passed. I decided about 4 weeks later to go back, but it was gone. So I bought a Smith & Wesson 317 Kit Gun. What a wonderful little revolver this is. Its all aluminum, and weighs a third what the SP101 weighs. Its extremely accurate, and after changing the rear sight, now I shoot it accurately.
The last void in my 22 revolver collection was a medium frame, double action. Since Ruger doesnt make this size revolver, I bought a Smith & Wesson 617 with a 4" barrel. What a beautiful gun. 10 shot cylinder, full lug under the barrel, nice, fairly light, double action trigger and a single action trigger that is very light and crisp. Saturday morning I will get to shoot it, but I already know this one will be a winner.
It figures that when I went in and bought my S&W 617, when waiting for my background check to clear, I decided to look around in the cases, and guess what was there... Yup... SP 101 22. Well I didnt feel too bad because I have my 317 and really like it, but damn... I Am Ruger Loyal, But I Strayed Today

I was in the same boat, I wanted the SP but eventually decided the 617 would be the better choice for me.
You won't regret it at all.

Hey don't hang your head in shame. When asked what my favorite revolver is my first answer is a 4 inch barreled SP101. If asked what gun I would never part with my answer is a mid 70's S&W 28 highway patrol. Just mean you get to spread the love around your gun safe.

Yep, variety can be a good thing. I have a 2" and 4" SP101 but wanted a semi-automatic in 40 caliber. I held the SR 40, but didn't like the feel so I went with a Sig 2022. It just feels better in my hand which will greatly contribute to my enjoyment and accuracy.

There's nothing wrong with the S&W 617 and you are 100% correct about it weighing less than the SP101. One of the worst mistake's I made in firearms ownership was trading off a S&W M-18 I owned many years ago. Being in my early twenties and inexperenced I had decided it was simply to heavy for a 22 and went with a M-15 38 Special.. Oh well, hindsight is always right...

Hey Weblance, just for the record, how much did you pay for those two S&W's?

You're absolutely right. Ruger needs to make a medium frame 22LR DA. It's an obvious hole in their model lineup. I had a 617 and know what a fine revolver it is. Congrats. You'll love the way it shoots.

I like Rugers but have several Smith and Wessons. I have an older M17 K 22 in 6 inch. It definitley has a better trigger than my SP 101. I would't feel bad about straying, especially if you are a revolver guy!

Right now it's my favorite firearm I own. I've put roughly 200rds through it with no issues and the 1/8th progressive rifling makes the thing crazy accurate.
Congrats on your new purchase! I'd love to have a s&w revolver.
