couldn't get the link to work. most likely a snafu on my end (or more accurately, my cable company's end). what is the name of the video? i've been able to go to youtube type in the name, and get the right video, but the links haven't been working for me.

edit; ok, upon posting my comment the youtube video came up correctly.

ok, so i'll say flat out i personally know nothing about 1911s (except that they're really pretty), but a couple things leap out in this video that make me think "hold onto your 1911, enjoy it, see how it truly works for you."

1. he touts his credentials so many times, he reminds of one of those crusty old gun store guys who talk the talk to intimidate people.

2. it's early in the morning here, so i'll have to go back and watch this again later in the day, but it strikes me there are several points when he sort of talks in circles about what he thinks are the 'failures' (and i don't mean fte's or ftf's) of 1911s.

3. the way he talks, i have to wonder if the outfit he owns/works for has some sort of deal with glock.

4. one of the very few specifics he talks about is the angle of the grip. well, some people simply don't care for the angle on a glock-doesn't fit their hand right. he turns that around, and basically suggests that there's something wrong with people who like something other than the glock grip. a little psychological dodge and weave there.

i dunno, i have no experience with 1911s, but just based on his psych-out techniques in the video, i would put him on the back burner, take your 1911 out and enjoy it, and let the proof be in the pudding. if it works well for you, then it works well for you, and what he has to say on the subject is irrelevant.

I don't see what worries you in this video ... it's a troll posting, long on provocative opinion and short on facts. A good portion of it is just an ad hominem rant about 1911 owners, not the gun.

"All 1911s fail", but when he talks about mass production, we learn that stacking tolerances (a legitimate concern) will lead to one gun working perfectly and the next one being junk. So, all 1911s fail except for that one that works perfectly?

There are budget-priced 1911s that are known to be problematic, but even those go bang most of the time.

If you bought your gun for SD, then you want it to go bang every time. After you've put a thousand rounds through it you'll have a pretty good sense of whether or not it goes bang every time. If it does, keep it. If it doesn't, get something else.

I own a 1911, never had a problem with it. I have a Remington R1. Glocks are great guns, nothing against them, I have rented and shot them at the range and not had any issues. My preference is with the 1911, I just prefer the grip angle. Also think about this: the 1911 has been a military service pistol for a LONG time, Glocks have not...

It's up to you what you do, but I would stick with the 1911.

I own an SR1911 and I own a Glock and have shot several other Glocks and 1911s that belong to friends and family. I'm no expert but I do think there is a lot of hype that swirls around the Glock brand. They're fine pistols but I'm always leery of anybody who starts painting with such broad strokes "all XYZ guns are inferior", "Glock is the only choice for a defensive handgun" , etc. The best defensive handgun for YOU is the one YOU like - the weight, the grip, the way it carries, the results you can acheive at the range, etc. And the one that you put in the time and effort to practice with again and again and again. I love my SR1911 and the 1911 platform in general. I don't carry my SR1911 but only because I prefer to carry my SR40C or a small revolver.

If Glock was the best and only choice in a defensive handgun then why do so many military and LEO carry other brands besides Glock? Not everyone is a fan of the 1911 but I say keep the 1911 and enjoy it if that's what you like.

I think you should relax and enjoy your new 1911. This video is:

1. one guy's opinion, and you know what they say about opinions...
2. a troll

The funny thing is that his main argument against 1911s, the so-called stacked-up tollerances, is the feature of any mass maufactured equipment and therefore (although he fails to realize that) also applies to his beloved Glocks. But who cares about facts when a good argument can be made.

I think he's talking about combat use as much as home/self defense.

In my opinion, if your personal firearm (1) shoots reliably when it is clean and loaded with your self defense ammunition, and (2) you can hit the target... it works as a self defense gun.

So many people love Glocks for their reliability and simple design. Some of us pick one up and immediately don't like the feel of it. I doubt I will ever own one.

Enjoy your 1911. Once you become familiar with it's operation and reliabilty you will know whether it's going to be your go to weapon for self defense.

The man does make some valid points. However, if the run of the mill 1911 is as unreliable as he suggests, the U.S.M.C. has made a mistake by selecting it as their weapon of choice. The new weapon passed all their tests and will be manufactured by Colt here in the U.S.
The Glock is a fine weapon and is used by more military and police agencies than any weapon in history. But, the 1911 is also a fine weapon that is time tested and proven and it is all steel.
You certainly haven't hurt yourself by selecting your 1911. Shoot it often with different types of ammo. Find the brand and type that it prefers then shoot it until you have confidence in it. That 1911 should make you a happy man. If it doesn't work out for you then, sell it and buy a G21.

My SA 1911 U/C has gone bang every time I pulled the trigger except when the recoil spring was worn and needed to be replaced at the 5000 rd mark which btw is about twice of what most smiths/manufacturers recommend replacing it at. Let's face it, all semi auto pistols will have the same issue at some point in it's life, after all it's a machine and like any machine with use can and will fail at some point or another.

Point being that this is one guys OPINION, take it for what it's worth. Shoot your 1911 and like has been said once you got about 1k through your gun, form your own opinion. Would I trust my life to my 1911, absolutely, without hesitation. Just like I would trust it to any of my Sigs or Rugers that I have owned long enough to put a fair amount of lead downrange to build confidence in that particular pistol.

swindler1 is an unknown quantity at this point
I own Sig, Glock, Beretta, CZ, Colt, S&W, Ruger and Springfield Armory. My go to gun is a Springfield Armory TRP ( 1911 ). I have put close to 10,000 rounds down range without failure. Of all the guns I have this is the gun that I trust my life to.
With that said, I had a very nice Bobtailed Dan Wesson ( 1911 ) that I traded off at a loss. I never could make it dependable.
If I had pick only 4 guns I could keep they would all be 1911's
