| I Am Ruger Loyal, But I Strayed Today
I bought a Smith & Wesson 317 AirLite today. I have wanted a "kit gun" for more than 2 years now. When the SP101-22 was announced, I thought it would be the one I wanted. I started looking around, and no one had one. So I bought a Single Ten. I love this revolver. Its accurate and beautiful. I thought it would quench my thirst for a "Kit Gun" Well... it didnt. There is nothing wrong with it, but I wanted something smaller and lighter. I finally stumbled across a SP101-22. I wasnt thrilled with it, Its proportions looked all wrong to me. Its a beautiful gun, but the grip just looked out of place. I passed on it. Took about 4 weeks, and I couldnt stand it any longer. I went back after it, and it was gone. I have thought about the S&W Model 63, but really wanted to stay Ruger. I decided to just have a "look" at the S&W revolvers, but the moment I held the 317 AirLite, I knew it was going home with me. I havent shot it yet, and I have read they are somewhat tricky to be accurate with, because they are so light, but they are simply amazing just how they feel in your hand. At under 12 ounces, they feel unnatural. Im used to handguns having some heft. This thing just feels like its plastic. If you have never held an AirLite, words cant describe the way they feel. 3" barrel, 8 shot cylinder. I think Im really going to like this one, even thought its not Ruger. Sorry...

Congrats on your new gun. What matters most is if you like it. Sounds like that's not a problem. |

No reason to apologize. I have a 'mixed' family in the safe too. Here is my 'kit' gun. S&W Model 34 in Nickel.

You only have to please yourself. Ruger makes fine guns but so does others.

Nothing wrong with "straying" to another US gun company
My most recent "stray" was an NAA mini .22, I love it and Ruger doesn't make an equivalant gun. Ruger also doesn't make an Airlite .22, so as long as you're happy with it that's the only thing that matters. As a customer, we pay our hard earned money and we are the ones who need to be satisfied with a product.
If I'm in the market for a gun, I always look at Rugers first......for example, my wife is getting a CC permit and likes the LCP, and it would be perfect for her. I would not get a S&W Bodyguard or a Kel-Tec.
But, Ruger doesn't make a .32 Auto sub-compact pistol, but Beretta does and I'm looking at getting a Tomcat. I already have a .25 Bobcat and like it. I tend to stay with certain manufacturers.

S&W does make a .22 WMR J-frame, and I'm pretty sure it's an alloy frame.
I know because I was going to buy one for my Mom to use for CC and HD. .22 WMR is about the max she could handle and actually hit with. And a revolver is something she could point and shoot.......if the round was a dud, she can pull again. No clearing, no "tap rack ready", just pull the trigger.
I decided against it and just gave her my older S&W 60 and it's loaded with light wadcutters. I felt better with the added reliability of the .38's.
I would love a compact revolver in .17 HMR, too. Ruger, how about an LCR-17? |
