Hi all!,

I know this is a Ruger forum, and I am a happy SR9 owner, but I have a dilemma on my hands...

I have a very strong interest in a Beretta 92/M9. I own an SR9, and a Smith & Wesson M&P 9c. My wife owns a Beretta PX4 Storm Compact 9mm. I do not have the want or need for an additional 9mm pistol. Granted I live in Illinois, so the prospect of concealed carry is very far off (if ever) but in the event, I have my M&P9c to fit that slot. So for a full size 9mm is purely for range use. My home defense set-up is a Mossberg 500 12ga w/ my Remington R1 1911 .45 as backup.

So here lies my dilemma...

I am considering trading my SR9 in for the Beretta. (I know, I know) but I am on the fence.

My first experience shooting a handgun was w/ a rented Beretta, and I do remember it being very fun to shoot, but I do plan to go to the range next week and rent one again and shoot it side-by-side w/ my SR9 just to be sure.

But, I would like the advise/ Opinions of the many great and informative people of this forum to help me figure things out. Obviously a side-by-side shooting will make my final determination, but opinions are always welcome.

Thanks!!

-Greg.
They are both fine guns, but very different guns, too. The Beretta is a higher end gun than the SR9, and is worth more on the market providing they're both in good condition. I have an SR9c, an 92FS and a 96FS. I prefer the action in the SR9c over the Berettas but dollar wise the Beretta out ranks the Ruger.

Congratulations... I know exactly what you went through. I put my 92fs on layaway for a month so i could keep my sr9. But thst beretta wont let you down and will go bang everytime.

IMO you made the right choice. I just prefer metal framed guns though. Congrats on the new toy.

Have you shot them side by side? My friend purchased a 92, and side by side, I like my SR9 much more. Less felt recoil, less flip (heavier spring in SR9 and lower bore axis, weird for a heavier gun), and the safety system is just plain stupid on the 922/M9. When you have the safety on, you can still pull the trigger with no real difference, better remember that or you might not survive it in a bad situation. Sights were same radius. I might be biased because I own the SR9, but for 1.5 times the cost, the SR9 was in my opinion, a far better handgun. Watch out for the finish too, some of the coating chipped off under his rails. Reminded me of the crappy finish on my "Stainless" 10/22 receiver, online research and reviews tell me that they dont allow a certain chemical in the USA that they originally did on the italian guns.

Just read your post, sorry about your lose, just make sure to watch your finish for chipping, my friend wanted a full metal gun, I steered him to the 92, but I really wasnt impressed with the quality for $700ish, he bought one as soon as they got them. Clean youre firing pin channel, his jammed after a a few range trips and I had to beat it to get the packing grease out of the way at the time just for him to shoot it. If you like the gun, hey, thats your decision, but for the price range, I would have got a Sig. I would never give up my SR9, its been nothing but perfect to me.

Well, its all opinion. I have nine of them and have none of those problems. Never had an issue with the firing pin either.

I personally have shot an SR9 a few times. I didn't care for the gun. Don't like that rubber back strap, the feel of the trigger, and the recoil impulse of the gun. But, we all have our likes and dislikes. Doesn't make a bad gun.

However, I will admit that there is a limited problem with Italian Inox models - with the finish. Some people are having a problem. I personally only like Berettas in black, and I've had no issues with any of mine.

Safety? That's a training issue. Many DA/SA 9mms have a safety on the slide. I personally only use the safety as a decocker - with the 1st shot being DA, it really isn't necessary to leave it on. And, I've never accidentally had it come on after years of daily carry.

Sig - I personally find the view from the rear of the gun strange - slide height form the rear just makes the slide seem huge. I also personally hate the way the decocker works on all their guns. I've owned pretty much everything over the years, at some point or another. But, I never bought a Sig. I've shot a lot of them, and almost came close to buying a 220 once. But, I just never could make myself like Sigs enough to buy one.

Although it might be sacrilege on this forum, I'd say that the Beretta M9/92A1 is a better choice for someone in a state that doesn't trust its citizens to carry firearms. I've carried an M9 in the past and I have a 96A1 (.40 S&W) what I love dearly. The SR9 is lighter (by far!) and thinner, but you won't be packing it any time soon - unless you leave Illinois.

I see that you've already decided to get the 92A1, so congratulations!

So it's been a day now... have you planned your next Beretta purchase yet?

Not to change the direction of, or highjack the thread, but these are the things with gun laws, that annoy & frustrate me. So, . . . . . you traded in a perfectly good, working handgun, on a somewhat similar new handgun ! So, . . . . . . Why can't you take the new one with you ? Whasssup ?? Is the new one more likely to cause you to turn into a maniacal killer, & go on a wild rampage, than the old one did ?? So many of the various gun buying laws make absolutely no sense to any rational person !!

There, . . . . . I feel better now.

Yes, that waiting period is ridiculous. I have been in a hurry but stopped at the gunstore just to look. Seen something and been out of there in less than 10 min...
