1911 22lr conversion kit

Thinking of adding a 45acp 1911 to my short list of pistol purchases. Since the weapon is somewhat standardized, are the 22lr conversion kits fairly universal or brand specific? Will the SR45 take one as well?

I have been wanting to add a 1911 and a 22 conversion to my collection too. I believe that the one kimber makes will fit standard 1911's (double check their site). Do you mean the SR1911? If the conversion says it fits standard sized 1911's it should

I spoke with a gun store employee the other day and they said that the .22LR conversion kit will work with MOST 1911s. Of course he also said only the full sized 1911s, but, and I'm not too educated on it, he said not all 1911 frames are exactly the same.

He is correct, the Kimber kit doesn't work on some 1911s. I know it won't fit on the Sig Sauer 1911s. The safety can't be engaged. Was all set to buy a Sig 1911, but that was the nail in the coffin and ended up with a Colt.

looks like I'll double up on research before buying a 1911. My luck won't let me buy a kit and have it work without verifying.

Another option is a complete 1911-22 pistol, such as the GSG and so on. These are complete guns going at a price that is comparable to most of these 1911-22 kits. I have a range friend that recently purchased the GSG and he has been very pleased with it. Having the complete 1911-22 saves you switching back and forth and it may be an easier sell to the spouse, too.

I have the Kimber conversion and the only frame it hasn't fit was a Rock Island, it has fit on full size and 3" Kimbers(leaves a gap in front of dust cover on the 3"), a full size Colt, a commander sized Colt, a full sized Springfield, and a full sized S&W, don't know if it will on a SR1911.

Does it leave a gap between the frame n slide on the Commander size Colt?

Gonefishin. I did have a Kimber conversion awhile ago. Put it on a Gold Cup series 70 frame and it did work quit well. However, It was ammo sensitive. I had to use high velocity and even then there were FTF and FTE. Forget about any standard velocity ammo. The best ammo was CCI mini mags for this conversion kit. And of course like most .22 conversion kits, there was no last round hold open feature. I sold it and purchased a GSG 1911-22 and never looked back. This thing will cycle any high velocity .22 I feed it, even the Remington Thunderbolts without a hiccup. And it has a last round hold open feature. It is a fantastic, ultra reliable plinking machine. So, with that said, I would take North Country Gals advice and get yourself a dedicated 1911-22 instead of a conversion kit. I think you may be happier in the long run. Good Luck!!

Does not Kimber now make a .22LR conversion for the short barrels? They have a page on it:

1911 Rimfire Compact Conversion Kit (Silver)

There are several other mfrs of conversion kits, also.

At one time there were also Wilson/Marvels, Tactical Solutions and Colt.

I picked up the Kimber conversion kit in the Bargain Cave at Cabela's for about $160 and it worked perfectly with zero malfunctions on my Rem R1 Carry and my Para Expert Commander. I ended up selling it because I also have the CZ Kadet II kit for my CZ pistols and I shoot that platform most of the time.

The CZ Kadet & Kadet II are the best .22 conversion kits out there. My Advantage Arms 1911 conversion kit is nowhere near as accurate or reliable as the Kadet.

I have to agree although I installed the Dawson Precision fiber optic front sight on my Kimber kit and it suddenly became more accurate. I wonder if it was because I could actually see the front sight?
