I met a guy at the range a month ago that had a Desert Eagle in .50AE and the thing was very large and loud. But he was saying it's pretty much just a safe queen because the ammo is so hard to find and it's expensive. All he had for it was 20 rounds of Hornady XTP that he paid around $40 for.

if you want wild and crazy big bore go with a 480 Ruger or 500 SW!
50 AE is alright but you`ll get more use out of one them other "big bores"...especially if you reload!!!! but if you do reload it doesn't matter what you get anyway.

Nobody even makes a gun chambered in 480 at this time... I have a few big revolvers its the semi auto that has me interested....
I appeciate everyones opinion but is there anyone that has one or used one several times that can comment on reliability ect...

I had a .50AE Desert Eagle that I took on trade a few months ago. Took it out shooting and really didin't care for it. The grips are way too big, and it has got to have the worst muzzle flip of any gun that I have ever shot. This is coming from a guy who owns a .460S&W and makes some insane reloads for it. Needless to say I sold it. Now of you want some exciting big bore fun go with the .460 or .500 mags. If you reload the .460 will outperform the .500 with up to 350gn bullets. People at the rifle range look at me funny when I set up my little 12" steel plate at 300 yards then become pretty quite when I hit it with all 5 shots.

my understanding is...
the Deagle jams a lot.
kinda sad, as it seems like a cool gun,
that I would consider owning in 44Mag

I have been wanting a 10" barrel Eagle in 50. I just haven't finished saving up for it yet since I want to buy a whole package with reflex sight, holster, ammo, extra mag, etc.

From what I hear, the DEs look cool but are kinda picky. I would get one if I had a spare $1.5K sitting around! |

I have no problem with recoil, I shoot 45 colt magnum 44 mag plus p and a 454 and a 475 linebaugh but my hands are far too small to hang onto a desert eagle. The 50 ae was designed to fir a particular platform the desert eagle. If you are not going to shoot that I would recomend one of the other large bores. 50 sw can be loaded to desert eagle levels and is easier to reload and cheaper to buy brass for.

I understand the alternative of the 500 S&W... My attraction to the DE is it being a semi auto, i know that if you buy the 50AE for a about 300 bucks a piece you can convert it to 357 and 44 mag so you could shoot all three calibers, if i read it right it is easy to change from any one caliber to another

Personally I think the deagle is big and ugly. A gas operated semi handgun sounds cool, but for me, it's a great movie prop gun. It's big, it's intimidating and makes for cool bad guy scenes, but outside that...meh.
I rank them in that group of "things" I would associate with not so intelligent gang banger types...like holding the gun on it's side when they shoot. The deagle is big and flashy, but there are other handguns out there I'd rather have.
But, that's just me.

To switch to .357 you need to swap out the bolt as well.
