From Charter to Kel Tec

I got my Charter Arms Off duty back from the factory. They replaced the mainspring and firing pin. Now it works again (no misfires or hang ups), but the trigger is very long and gritty, making it hard to shoot and inaccurate. Plus the grips on it just seemed to hurt, even when firing only standard pressure rounds. It didn't seem to be so bad before.

So even though it was compact and I had plenty of ammo for it, I wasn't hooked on it and I traded it for a PF9 even though my only other experience with KelTec wasn't positive. I didn't like the P11 I had many years ago.

From what I've read the PF 9 has gone through its growing pains and the newer ones perform well for the most part. And even though the trigger pull is long, compared to that little Charter it is smooth and not very heavy. Add 7 rounds as opposed to 5 and 50% more barrel and I was willing to give it a try.

I had at first decided to get an LCR, but changed my mind at the last minute. Sorry guys, but even though the LCR has a good reputation and a great trigger action, it just appeared bulkier with the stock grips and the boot grips just seemed a tad bit too small. Plus again, the longer barrel will on the 9 will almost certainly give me more power.

It probably won't be a "fun" gun to shoot, but if it is reliable it looks to be a decent size for concealing in several different ways. For fun I can always take my CZ75b or my Colt Python to the range. But for toting around I can now pick between the SP101 or the PF9, assuming it proves its reliability.

Well I'm disappointed. Finally took the PF9 to the range. Worked fine with my winchester 115 grain fmj target stuff. Trigger pull is long but smooth, not unpleasant to shoot.

After 100 rounds with no problems I switched to my chosen defense ammo, 147 grain winchester white box jhp.

Then I started have FTF's, dang it. Not constantly, but most times at least once per magazine. And most of the time it seemed to be with the third round.

Perhaps it will work with some 124 grain stuff, but I'm not too happy that my 2nd experience with Kel Tec so far is not much better than my first.

Any advice from PF9 owners?

I'm not an owner. If it feeds the lighter stuff and not the heavier, I wonder if the magazine spring might not be strong enough to push up the heavier rounds. Good Luck!

Wheely do you have the pinky extension on the magazine?

I had a similar problem with mine, and discovered because I was trying to squeze my pinky on top of the extension it would put enough downward pressure on the mag that it would affect feeding.

When I tried 147 Gr ammo in +P it would actually dislodge the mag.

Began wrapping my little finger under the mag rather than on top of the extension and it solved the problem. Actually had a better grip that way as well. Mine shoots without issue now through several hundred rounds.

That said I just bought an LCR in .38 which I've been carrying for a week or so. It actually seems to print less than the PF9, and is a whole lot lighter loaded. But I do only have 5 rounds now. I'll probably rotate them for pocket carry.

Good luck with the PF9.

I did not have the pinky extension on. I do have a handall jr., and I noticed at times that it seemed to have slipped down a bit and was holding the magazine in place when I tried to eject it. I suppose it is possible that it had done the reverse and was not allowing the mag to seat completely, but I don't really think so.

I may just need to run some more 147's through it to break it in completely. I believe you are supposed to give it 200 rounds or so and I have only done 150 so far. I had only brought 1 box of 147's with me so I couldn't do any more at the time.

I'll give it another session at the range before I get truly disappointed. I like the possibilities of this one for edc if I can be satisfied with the reliability. With the handall on it was easier to shoot than I had expected, even though that long trigger pull will keep it from being a tack driver, at least in my hands. But that is not what it was designed for, so I have no problem with that.

Don't know when I'll get back to the range though. With all my home life activities I don't have much time during the weekends these days. I actually had to play hooky from work for a while yesterday to do what I did. I was really hoping that one trip would have done the job and I could be satisfied with it so that I could start ordering holsters . But alas, my life seems to seldom work so simply.

I have a PF-9 and am pleased with. However, the KelTecs sometimes need a little fluff and buff to really run perfect.

KTOG.Org - TecWerks - CB3's Detailed Fluff & Buff (fluff and buff)- Kel-Tec Owners Group

I did this and it smoothed the gun up quite a bit. Now I have a gun that is super easy to conceal, packs a good amount of power, and is 100% reliable for me.
