Both are good looking.

I would grab the 686.

Depends....self defense or house gun, I'd probably take the 1911 because it is going to dump most if not all of it's power into the target. The .357 will likey exit the body and possibly penetrate walls or strike a bystander. Hunting or longer range shooting the 686 is in its comfort zone. Loaded with .38s it might serve for a personal defense or house gun but not as effective as the ,.45. Uhh....you are aware that Ruger makes a fine 1911 (SR1911) and a stellar .357 (GP100).

The 686-6 because I already have an SR1911CMD but do not have a .357 wheel gun. The S&W 1911s are nice looking guns but I just can't past the fish scale looking serrations.

I vote for the revolver....always functions. No safety, no slide to pull back..
Pull the trigger and bang!

before the switch to semi autos 357 caliber 125 grain jacketed hollowpoint was the gold standard for stopping power and the newer bullets are only better.

Would be a tough call for me since I own neither of those platforms. Probably go with the 1911. Why? Because if I had to, I could EDC it.

686 gets my vote. Everybody makes a 1911 these days and there are certainly others I'd choose over the S&W. The 686 however is tough to beat.

686-6. Besides being a revolver guy, the 357/38 provides a much more versatile ammo option. I have several 686s and they are extremely reliable, accurate, and fun. In the end get the one you like most.

Based on my recent experience with new S&W revolvers, I would pick the 1911. The wheel guns are suffering from QC issues

The 1911
While I agree many others make 1911's I like just as much for less money, the same can be said for .357 magnum revolvers. Of the 2 style of guns, quality is more important on the 1911 than on the revolver
Why not both?

I really like that 1911. But I prefer pistols over revolvers, except for big bore magnums of course. :-)

1911. I bought one of the earlier S&W 1911s w/ factory Crimson Trace years ago when in law enforcement. I still have it and it is a great shooter. One of the best out of the box 1911s I know thest is not custom or high end builder. Good enough that I staked my life on it for years.
