I have several versions of each one of those guns.
I would probably go with the 1911 if it is for home defense.
Both are great guns in are accurate and easy to handle.
It comes down to a personal choice .
686 can be uploaded downloaded depending on the circumstances.
the S&W 1911 is a very very good gun.
Get what you like best and are most comfortable with.
And then go to the range and shoot it a lot, have fun

S&W, the 686, if I wanted a 1911 I'd go with Colt or SA.

You can conceal a 686 I concealed a smith 57 4 inch 41 mag and it was doable and that id larger framed than the 686.

Well, since I like S&W semi-autos better than their revolvers, I'd say the 1911!

Here's mine:

For a S&W .45 ACP, I'd take the 625 wheelgun. The 686 is a nice wheelgun, too.

I've got a 625 PC. It is a nice piece of work and a great shooter. Most who've shot it were really impressed with it. I'm a big fan of 45 acp. I just like the short, fat, slow suckers.

686 for me.
Pasted up a New Used one on Gunbroker, 1987 just a few small nicks on the Grips.
But, the Old Poll Barn needed a new roof so, that ended that.
That one had a 6" barrel on it.
Sure was Good One.

I have both, 686-4 + and an E series 1911. Tough choice for sure. Think it boils down to use & future possible use.

Both can serve well as home defense and carry with proper holster & belt with the 1911 probably easier to conceal. But I prefer to carry a revolver than a 1911.

That said, if you ever want to participate in IDPA or USPSA, I'd go with the 1911 w/o hesitation.

Bottom line- you can't go wrong with either. Which one to get is a decision you'll need to make based on your anticipated use(s).

Good luck and let us know what you decide.
