What length for self defense in 44 Magnum?

I'm just curious. I don't know if I'd ever carry a 44 Magnum for defense against 2 legged critters. But I'd like to hear some input and pics would be a bonus. I'm thinking 3-5" for a barrel.

Brand and models would be helpful, too.

If you don't have specifics on if or how or why you'd carry a .44 magnum for defense then the quality of folks' input might be commensurately hazy.

I sometimes carry a Redhawk Alaskan (2.5" barrel) for self defense but never loaded with 44 mag. I'd be afraid of over penetration. It's overkill which is why I load it with 44 Spl. instead.

I'd carry it in a paddle holster or shoulder holster.

Why carry it? I like the power, penetration and I shoot it well.

I see. It just wasn't clear if this is for rural carry, urban, etc. A 44 magnum is a fine gun for animals but for anything remotely urban the penetration might be considered by many as excessive. That's why I wondered if you're far off the beaten path.

How do you know you shoot it well if you're still deciding on barrel length per your first post?

4" is the all around best for carry and maximizing powder burn. I also like the 3" barrels as well.

If I were to consider carrying a .44 Magnum, it would most likely be a S&W Model 69 with the 2.75" or 4" barrel.

My 4 inch 629 has huge muzzle blast and recoil with mag ammo. With specials it is gentle. Don't think I'd want one any shorter..

I occasionally carry my 44 Mag Alaskan in a shoulder rig. But I don't carry it with full power 44 Mag rounds. I use Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel 200gr. Basically downloaded 44 Mag. https://www.grafs.com/retail/catalog...roductId/17280

I used to carry Hornady 44 SPL Critical Defense, only because it took me over a year to find any of the Speer Ammo in stock. If you're going to tote around a few pounds of gun it might as well be loaded with 44 Mag!

1049 FPS
15.5" Penetration

I have several .44Mag Revolvers including the S&W 69, but I wouldn't consider carrying one for self Defense unless I lived in Bear Country. If I had to pack a .44 Mag I would choose my S&W Model 629 Talo 3" Barrel. These guns are still available on GB for $600to700 bucks and in my opinion are quite a bargain. Mine shoots great with full house Mags. My second choice would be the S&W 69. The only Redhawk that I owned was a 7.5 inch that I bought when ruger first released them many years ago.

Taurus made a 5 shot 44 Magnum on the Tracker frame with a 2.5" barrel. These are SMALL revolvers for the caliber. S$W makes the 4" 329 44 Magnum. This is a lightweight 6 shot, but its full size. I believe they weigh 23 oz, which is very light for the caliber

it's not just the issue of over-penetration with the 44 mag as a self-defense round against attackers who can shoot back, it's also a matter of follow up shot speed and accuracy. That kind of recoil and muzzle jump, especially with short barrel 44 mags, is going to be a real disadvantage in a shoot out. People who do carry a 44 mag as protection against armed attackers either load down the 44 mag or shoot 44 Specials. Even Dirty Harry did that with his S&W 44 mag in the Dirty Harry movies.

WHY tote around a big heavy hand cannon for SD or an EDC then tame down the ammo so a kid can shoot it?

That make little or no sense to me.
You end up with this.

If I carry my Super Blackhawk for personal protection I load it with 44 specials.
