Its arbitrary, but between 6 and 12 rounds of shot, i will have another lockup.

I love the gun and if i cant get it solved, will have to sell to fund a new gp100....

It is odd that this issue exists even with no brass in the cylinder. I've seen a Smith 686+ bind during cycling as a result of a poorly fit hand contacting the case rims, but your issue remains even when empty. Are there any unusual wear marks on the hand/pawl or ejector star? Verify a consistent BC gap on all chambers. Also observe the transfer bar in it's channel. Perhaps it's hanging up on some casting irregularity or burr? If nothing visual is observed, remove the trigger group and check for burrs or debris. If still nothing, it's not too hard to get the cylinder off the crane and take a look for debris.
