What Laidlerj says is true. You'll be shocked at how loud the noise will be, especially if it's a .357 or .44. So you may not even notice the flash. Your ears will ring for days.

What? Huh? I can't hear you over that darn ringing noise!

I let off three shots from a .45 ACP inside a house once and all I could hear was a high-pitched ringing sound for over an hour. That's why there's a set of electronic ear muffs on top of the gun locker in my bedside table.

I keep a pair of orange ear plugs on my bedside table. I use them sometimes to help me sleep if noises keep me up (wife snores occasionally, and we have some stupid bird that likes to go off around midnight). But I keep them there if anything goes sideways, and should need to fire a gun inside.
