Colt Woodsman ????

A fellow at work asked me if I was interested in a Colt Woodsman he had. It was given to him by his father and he has no interest in it. He claims his father got it from a friend who worked for Colt. He said that this fellow built it for himself and that is the reason there is no serial number on it, just says The Woodsman. Any experts on here want to chime in. I'm interested but don't want to pay to much. I looked on GB and prices are all over the place.

Dang! That looks to be in GREAT condition. I'd jump on it if I were you (and since it's your money anyway ).

I've seen prices for the Woodsman up near $1,000 and as low as half that. What's he asking?

I have never owned or shot one, but they are very, very well-regarded. That one looks like a beauty.

I'd jump right on it accept for one thing. I'd be real worried owning a handgun w/o a S/N.
I know years ago long guns weren't required to have a S/N but I'm almost 100% positive all handguns had to have numbers. That with the long guns and no S/N's was changed years ago. Before I did anything I'd contact BATF and find out the legality of owning it.

Production gun without a serial number? Good luck, make sure you get documentation backing up the claim.

From what he has told me it was a one time build by a worker at Colt. He built it for himself. I asked him if he has any paperwork with it and he said he would check. I don't need another gun, but, for the right price I might take it.

If he used Colt machinery it IS a production gun, and not homemade. Not telling you not to buy, but get very damn good documentation if you do.

If it can be documented that he built it at home on his own equipment then that would be different, and fall under homemade.

IMO not worth a felony conviction.
