It sounds like the thinner gun isn't going to be a big improvement in that regard. Perhaps appendix carry would be less noticeable? Or maybe the better choice is to add a pocket-sized 380 (LCP II, probably) for those times that the 40 is too noticeable.
+1 on keeping the 40 and getting a smaller, more concealable 380 or 9mm. I carrying a Walther P99C-AS. It's a compact gun, but even that gun is too big for me to carry sometimes, especially in the summer. I'd consider an LCP custom or a SIG P238. Those guns disappear in a pocket. That way you're covered in both situations, and can actually carry the smaller gun as a backup. Don't sell the 40. It sounds like you will regret it.

Hunter - yeah, I really like the SR40C. And all of my reloading gear is for 40, and I would just hate to have to buy more toys - I mean, dies - for 9mm

JaPes - the more I think about it the more I think I will keep the 40 and add a 380. Or maybe a micro 9, like a DB9.

Ronzonie - I'm also in AZ. I was thinking a Shield would be a little large for a pocket gun, but I haven't actually tried it.

Beachcomber86 - I liked the Ruger SRs better than the M&Ps for hand fit. To each his own.

Don't know if revolvers are in the mix here, but the LCR with a Hogue boot grip disappears in a pocket. Something about the shape of a revolver really agrees with pocket carry.

shield 9mm works fine as pocket carry for me, including CT Laser!

I've shot the LC9s and Shield side-by-side and found this:
Size difference is negligible
The LC9s ahs a Slightly better factory trigger
The Shield's perceived recoil (to ME) is smoother than the LC9s. Supposedly, the shield has a lower bore axis, which accounts for less perceived recoil?

I went with the Shield and have not been disappointed at all, but you need to find a way to try both and see which YOU prefer shooting.

If at all possible, don't trade the SR40c. It's worth keeping.

Thank you all for the input. After much consideration, I decided to keep the SR40C and add an LCP II. I believe the LCP II will better fit my needs.

My collection remains 100% Ruger. Someone might think I'm a Ruger Fanboy. I wonder if they'd pay me to advertise for them...

Talldog - Revolvers were not considered for this purchase, but there is no reason one won't be added later. I've looked at LCRs (and others) a few times, and I think one in 327 Fed Mag would be a nice shooter.

If you do that, be sure to check out the Hogue boot grip. Makes a big difference for pocket carry.

The Shield is a very fine gun and a good shooter. IMO it is too big for pocket carry.

I personally have selected the Sig P238 for my pocket carry gun. It too is a good shooter, and it is small enough for a suitcoat pocket and other types of pocket carry.

I do own a Shield and I really like it.
