Well in a weak moment a long time ago I plopped some $$ down for a custom 1911 in 9mm (since I have a couple other 9mm). Took 18 months but worth it! Picked it up Saturday and need to put 300-500 rounds through it this coming weekend. As I was leaving the shop he said to make sure I start with "hot" rounds and no steel. Are hot rounds just 147 grain? +P? Recommendations? I have plenty of target ammo and a few boxes of HP....
Nice gun. Give us a report when you knock some rounds through it. I don't think "hot" is going to matter right now. Wilson has a break-in procedure that does not specify the need for hot ammo. Just put 300-500 factory rounds through it. Wilson even noted the gun should not be cleaned until you've completed the break-in. I would agree not to use steel or aluminum cased ammo.
The plan is to put 500 rounds through it and then back to the gunsmith with a "report" and then he'll clean it and check it. He is the one who asked for "hot" rounds for the break-in period, I'm assuming to really loosen it up.
I would start with a good quality, standard pressure 124 grain FMJ. If you want something just a little hotter, go with the 124 grain NATO spec 9 mm from Winchester or Freedom Munitions.
In my experience, 9mm auto-loaders are less likely to have issues with 124 grain 9 mm ammo than with 115 grain or 147 grain.
Wilson's product is top notch. I would use 300 rounds fmj brass cased and not worry.
