This may have been posted before but I am watching the TV show "Outrages Acts of Science " and they had it on and I was amazed that anyone could make the shot.
Sorry to be a wet blanket here, but that is not what I'd call a skill shot. Don't get me wrong I have tons of respect for Jerry and his speed shooting skills and all around exhibition shooting, but that 1,000 yard shot is something ANYONE could do if they had enough ammo. I've been around plenty of long range rifle shooters and have a bit of experience myself and there's plenty of variables that need to be taken into consideration for a rifle to reach out to 1,000 yards let alone a pistol that's shooting a bullet type that's not meant for long range accuracy.
I would say what makes that a skill is how many rounds it takes to make the shot. He's shoot very much like Elmer Kieth, Elmer had a skill. His skill was not so much hi tech, but more instinctive or judgment, and feel. It's like the fast draw shooting that Bob Munden did in his time.
What we don't know is how many rounds he fired before the successful balloon shot. He could have been there hours taking shots and then its a matter of editing the film.
I made a 150 yard shot with a Beretta, the first time that I ever used the gun, and with only a few shots fired.
Long range shots are possible, but 1,000 yards is a stretch, I don't think that I could make it.
