Hello...9mm x 23mm caliber...anyone have one...shoot one?

I'm considering building a 1911 9 x 23...just curious as to whether anyone has one...has shot one...etc.

Ballistics on it are reasonably impressive...matching or exceeding .357 magnum ballistics...

Getting a bid from www.fusionfirearm.com to see about getting a kit from them and assemble it myself (slide already fitted to the frame) and maybe build a nice pistol...

Not sure if I'll carry it or not...but am considering getting one none-the-less!

Thoughts? Opinions?

I don't own one but I'm familiar with the cartridge. Its primary use is to "make major" for IDPA with a 9mm bullet AND provide additional gas for a compensator to utilize.

I wouldn't consider it for other applications due to cost and no real advantage outside of the world of shooting games.

The 9 x 19 (9mm Lugar) is a high pressure round to start with (35K psi) and the 9 x 23 allows for a bit more weight & speed to make major without being insanely stupid with a 9 x 19 casing.

The 9mm +P+ will get you to near .357 mag performance (not there but close) and can push a 115 grain bullet well over 1300 fps. It has the advantage of less expensive components and guns, plus far less expensive practice ammo.

The 9 x 23 may look cool on paper because it's not the garden variety 9mm but outside of the shooting games I just don't see a huge advantage.

There was a time when the 38 Super was the way to get a little more out of a 9mm projectile (and it still does some impressive things) but the 9mm +P+ has closed that gap considerably.

I have shot the 9x23 many years ago when my friend built and shot guns competitively. It had the comp and tremendous muzzle blast. Quite intimidating as a bystander. Shooting it was sublime, the front sight just moved from plate to plate settling quickly and easily. Much less intimidating shoot. It made anyone shooting it look good.

I had a Star Super A which was 9x23mm Largo. It was quite a hot round, but I sold the pistol because factory ammo is no longer available for it. The newer 9x23 Win cartridge is a whole different animal. They do warn that the 9x23 Win will load into a lot of the Largo guns, but NEVER to fire them in the Largo guns as they are much to hot...could be a catastrophic failure...

I was going to mention that the 38 Super is a 9x23SR where SR stands for Semi Rim. I have a couple of them and they are more fun if you reload. I was sniffing the 9x23 Winchester but then started to play with 10 mm (10x25) which is also more fun if you reload. So the four cartridges I play with right now on the 10mm platform are 9mm (9x19) on the left, 38 Super, then 45 ACP and finally 10mm.
