Hey all, I've been away for a while but as always when I need advise I turn to the people I know will have great things to say. :D

I currently own three handguns all Rugers. By far my favorite is my full size SR1911. I am thinking my next purchase is going to be a 9mm version 1911. The two I am currently looking at are the Ruger and the Springfield EMP4. I have not shot either of them yet, I am still working on that. Any pros or cons on these two or other suggestions are welcome. I am looking at staying in that basic commander size.

I cannot advise you on your specific question but I own two Colt Commanders; one in 45 ACP and one in 9mm. Both are fantastic all-steel pistols. The 45 can get a little snappy after a box of 230 gr ammo but I can shoot the 9mm all day and it's calm as a kitten.

Since I have a Ruger SR1911 and (6) Colt 1911's it's hard for me to justify buying another, but I have to admit I really like the new Ruger 9mm 1911. Time will tell if I get one in my stable.

Have fun planning and good luck with your decision.

I bought my EMP 3" before the 4" was introduced. The EMP was designed from the ground up around the 9mm cartridge. All dimensions of the gun are scaled down a slight bit. Mechanical design and controls are identical to a standard 1911, except no external barrel bushing. They take proprietary mags also. Mec-Gar is the mag supplier. Mags are super high quality and run around $30 each. Springfield Armory supplies a coupon upon purchase for a discount on accessories which helps. I like a smaller grip so the EMP fit is perfect for me. The 4" has the same grip size as the 3" (circumference) so grip feel should be the same. I think it may be a little longer for the extra round capacity. The rep a SA did state the mags were different.

Heavy bull barrel makes them very accurate. Hair under a 5 pound, crisp clean trigger. Factory Trijicon night sights. Ramped bull barrel. Ambi safety, series 70 design. Full length double spring guide rod. About 26 ounces in weight. Quality SA fit and finish. Can't tell you much about the Ruger but can tell you that I absolutely love the 9mm in this platform. It is a winner. Flawless operation right out of the box. Not a hiccup to date. It is time tested and has been around for a number of years. IIRC it was introduced around 2007. BTW I have a SR1911 in .45 also so I'm not brand biased.

Hickok45 does a good review of it.

Well great advice and comments on both sides, much appreciated!! Looks like I have a tough decision to make. I will definitely have to try and find them both to shoot and hope that makes the decision clear.

Will post when decision and purchase is made for sure. Thanks again as always for the input!!
