Which do you prefer and why?

Well, easy to break down and clean, and eats any ammo you feed it, are the important things.
I just can't get past the looks of the SR-22, butt ugly IMO.
Yes I am biased as I have a S&W Compact. Here it is next to my M&P .40's.
The .22 M&P Compact has a nice trigger, adjustable sight and reversible mag release.
The M&P series has to be the most comfortable, natural pointing pistols I've yet used, and I've used just about everything.

I am brand new to firearms. I started at the ranges with .22 Semi- autos & going to Ladies night weekly where we shoot Semi Auto .22 & I have to say I seriously dislike this Caliber in Semi Auto. ALL brands that I have shot have had multiple malfunctions & sometimes several in just a 10 round magazine. It is frustrating, annoying, & unreliable. I have used the Ruger Mark 11, Ruger 22/45 lite, Ruger sr22, S & W .22, Walther, Beretta, & Sig. The best .22 were the Revolvers. Fun to shoot & reliable, any malfunction just pull the trigger again.
I bought a GP 100 .22 & LOVE IT. I have had it for 5 days & 300 rounds, do not regret getting a .22 Revolver. I also have a 9 mm Semi Auto with 550 rounds through it after 4 weeks & No Malfunctions.
Just go to several ranges & fire all the .22 they have. What annoys me may not annoy you.

If the .22 semi-autos you were firing were range rentals, then that probably had a lot to do w/ your problems. Those pistols are usually not cleaned & lubed like they should be, & that's more likely to cause malfunctions w/ a .22 than any other caliber.

I totally agree w/ you on .22 revolvers. I recently acquired up my 1st one, & I love it.

I owned an M&P22 for a while. It functioned fine but the safety was a joke and field stripping it was funky. I'll reiterate to be fair. The gun shot fine but for various reasons I just didn't like it very much. YMMV.

Never shot a S&W.
But, we do have a SR22PB-EX.
Have put this through the dickens and back.
I would not encourage anyone to do this.
Just recently ran 2000 rounds in between cleanings. And with all different types of Ammo.
Not for any special reason just did it to see what would go on.
Sure Surprised Me that thing fired every time without a hiccup or a burp.
It is one Tuff Firearm.
