Thirsty for Recoil

So my bones and joints are over 60 years old and I kept only one 44 magnum pistol and "she's a beast" S&W 329 PD Airweight. Whenever I light up full power mags in it my mom, a thousand miles away can here me whimper, " mommy it hurts".

So what is it with me and maybe others who just get thirsty for recoil and go off and shoot big honkin lead loads? I've been rehabbing our rental property after the deadbeats trashed it and ran off. Never be a landlord! Think that is why I am thirsty for recoil again?

We got any other thirsty guys and gals out there?

Guilty as charged. I sold off everything bigger than 357, last year, to save wear and tear on these old bones, arms and hands. Doggone it all, though, missed shooting the 44 mag so much that my hubby recently allowed me to pick up a blued SBH 5 1/2" and a blued Bisley 44 mag. You know, now that I'm back to shooting the 44 mag in these SAs, don't find the recoil to be a big deal. The 357 mag is a great cartridge, but just something about a 44 or 45. What was I thinking selling off my big boomers? Dumb, dumb, dumb.

I'm in the 'over 60 crowd' and I still won't part with my boomers. I have a 3" S&W 629, a .44 and a .50 Desert Eagle...useless, expensive to shoot, but still a hell of a lot of fun....I'm guilty!:D

I am a big caliber and recoil addict. 329pd, Redhawk 4" .44 mag, .300 winmag semi-auto, .45-70 lever gun, 10mm glock 29, 3-1/2" 12 guage goose loads,... Next on the list is a .338 win mag.

Oh yes, gotta love the hand cannons. Biggest I've got is a .44 Redhawk and it leaves me lusting for more. A 460 X-Frame is on my needs list.

Not a fan of hard kicking long guns, but hard kicking handguns don't bother me in the least. My uncle has a goofy looking single barrel Derringer style pistol in 8 gauge that I haven't worked up the courage to try yet. That's the curse of being the nephew of a Class III Dealer. You always see weird stuff!

Surprised I haven't seen anything like this yet!

I'm sort of the opposite. Heavy caliber rifles don't bother me but I generally don't enjoy shooting 44mag. I enjoy shooting pretty much all other pistol calibers except 44mag. 10mm, 45 Colt, 45ACP, & 454C are no problem but 44mag and I just do not get along. A lot of it has to do with the size and shape of the grip. I like Bisley grips for big recoiling handguns. Unfortunately all my 44mags are plow handled Vaqueros and Blackhawks. I'm about to rectify that and get a Bisley 44mag. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll enjoy shooting hotter 44mag loads with it because right now I limit my 44mags to medium loads or 44spl.

Recoil tolerance is very a subjective topic. One man's punishment is another's pleasure and a lot of us are wonderfully inconsistent. For example, how come I don't mind shooting 454C but 44mag kicks my butt? I know that the size, shape and grip of each gun have an effect but even with guns of similar dimensions I have difficulty with 44mag. I used to own both 45 Colt and 44mag Redhawks. Same gun. Same grips. Loved the 45 Colt. Hated the 44mag. Who knows?

Lee ... Sorry to hear of your landlord troubles (that sucks ). Regarding the recoil monster ... I now live in the land of "a man's got to know his limitations". The hands, wrists and elbows simply complain too much about anything over a .45acp (that sucks too :()

daleeman, sorry to hear about your Mom. Have been there also with mine and MIL, my prayers are with you.
Has been a slow day also…but then I thought…
Oh Man !
(I picked these up from the above comments)

“I have no practical use for……..”
“useless, expensive……”
“... I now live in the land of "a man's got to know his limitations". The hands, wrists and elbows simply complain too much about anything over …..”. So after 7 plus decades I was really concerned, rushed in, grabbed the .480, .338WIN MAG, .300WINMAG, .45-70, determined to not be defined by these comments. Then I stopped, went out to the shop, placed my finger on the bench, and smacked it with a hammer to remind myself of the similarity to the severity of the recoil (s). After hopping around in a circle with my cane, a sudden rush came over me, I felt faint so put the above (firearms) away, grabbed couple beers, sat on the porch, watch the fish jump and remembered the pain of the hammer. And…waited until the sudden urge left….J
Have a great day ! J

I was never a recoil junkie, but it never really bothered me much,, until a buddy, who IS a recoil junkie, handed me his 480 Ruger one day with some souped up hand loads.

To this day I'm surprised he didnt blow the gun apart. Pulling the trigger would split the skin between your thumb and forefinger.

I just fail to see the fun, or point in that. Just plain stupid and unnecessary IMO.

My first centerfire revolver was a NMSBH in 44 mag, wayyy back in the early 80s. I shot Hornady 240g SJHP in that booger and marveled at the kick. It always put a grin on my kisser. Had to sell it back then.

Fast forward to this past year, I bought another NMSBH in 44 mag and couldnt wait to feel that kick again. Honestly, again shooting 240g SJHP, I felt disappointed. It just doesnt kick like I remember. Feels like Im shooting my 357 SS with 180g SJHP. Maybe I need some of those Buff Bore hot 44 mag loads I keep hearing about?

It's a 'been done'. Now in my 50's, I just enjoy the .45 Colt and .44 Special level of power. I see no need/want for shooting wrist busters (for fun).

As I have gotten older I have unloaded some rifles like my No. 1 in 458 Lott. Also some of the barrels for my TC Contender. However I still like 44 Mag. and 45Colt/410 barrel in it plus my 223 barrel is fun.

And then I don't know why I bought a Bond, but I am going to buy the larger, rubber, grip for it.

I would have guessed that getting older would affect my desire to shoot the boomers. I've found that it is not true, yet. I took one of the 44 mags to the range yesterday. It never fails to trigger the question "what the heck is that". Win 296 loads in the 357, 44 mag and 480 Ruger always attract attention. The big grin on my face could be a sign I'm having fun. I've shot the 500 S&W and thought that was fun. I gotta give some credit to anyone who wants to shoot the 460. I've never had the chance to shoot one but understand it is a handful. Boom on!
