Since American Rifleman had an article about the new Legion series from SIg Sauer I've been pining after one. I've always wanted a P226 but never bad enough to go and drop the coin to get one. But I think I will if I can get my mitts on a P226 Legion SAO!
A friend has the DA/SA 229 Legion and loves it. I have a 226 Extreme in 40 with a 9 and 22 conversion kits. Not willing to give it up and I don't have an extra grand+ laying around right now.
It's an interesting concept. SIG's are very good firearms and I don't wish for my comments to be perceived as disparaging the quality of SIG pistol but the Legion series seems to be very heavy on marketing.
To be fair, the Legion series pistols do have some excellent improvements such as the PVD coating and the excellent sights but a lot of the additional cost seems to be justified by marketing the elite nature of the series (special access to a website, challenge coin, special cases, deals on knives, etc. ). From a business point of view, it's a brilliant plan on SIG's part to increase sales and bring some new life into an old design. I'm not knocking the guns themselves, they appear to be a good collection of features on a proven platform.
I think the true test will be the value of the guns themselves on the secondhand market. Stripped of all of the marketing ploys the price will be more about the guns and then we'll see if the price of admission was worth it.
I agree. I love Sig pistols and I own a bunch of them. I don't own a Legion because I find all the special operator hype to be a bunch of nonsense.
The only internal difference between a Legion and it's standard counterpart is the alleged quality of the trigger. I say alleged because some would have you believe it's been done over by Gray Guns while others say its the same trigger as other Sigs with a little better fitting done by the factory. I haven't shot one so I can't comment. There are more than a few reports of problems with premature wear of the finish. The x-ray sights are universally praised but you can buy them for any other Sig if you want them.
In a nutshell for $150 more than a regular Sig you get excellent x-ray sights, a sketchy PVD finish and a maybe/maybe not special trigger. Oh, you also get a challenge coin and special membership to the Legion Club.
Despite all that they're still a Sig and Sig is still making quality handguns. YMMV.
I decided the upgrades were significant enough to make this new Legion a worthwhile purchase.
I opted for the 9mm DA/SA.
I am getting a 5% discount from my lgs by showing up there on election day sporting an "I voted" sticker. $1215.00
I've already reserved the gun with a down payment and it is sitting in their vault. The gray guns trigger is awesome!
I wouldn't mind adding that pistol to my collection!
