Lower rail for a 22/45?

Lower rail for a 22/45?

I just got the latest MarkIII 22/45 threaded (10150), and want to install the lower rail from model 10149. I'm told that Ruger will not sell me a lower rail, and said I will have to have one made. Aside from that being more than a little strange, they won't drill the barrel for me because it would change the model number (to what?), but won't void my warranty if I have a gunsmith do it. The local guy I talked to has no problem drilling it for me, but I need the rail... and I want to use stock Ruger parts. Any ideas? I want to end up with iron sites with upper and lower rails. Thanks

Welcome from Australia mate.
Glad to have you on board, nice folk here and lots of good info.
Ruger will not change any firearm from original.
They will not sell you anything to change a firearm from original.
Ruger does not provide a warranty, look on the back page of your manual.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm glad I found this site, there are many questions I would like to find answers to, and this looks like the right place. I don't understand why I cannot buy a rail. Plain and simple, it is a stock part, for a stock gun.

resurrection

sorry for reviving a long dead thread - it may have been better to start a new one, I'll let mods decide if they so choose.

1Shooter, did you ever end up reconciling your 10150 and 10149?

I'm in the same boat, with a 10150, and while it's simple to put on a factory top rail it is oddly difficult to secure an under rail that matches the curvature of the bull barrel exactly. One of the local gunsmiths said that he could drill and tap it no problem, but that I'd need to find the rail. Perhaps I should find another gunsmith who can make one out of aluminum. I just want a laser on my range plinker!

For many, it's not an issue and straight rails can be affixed, but for me I would like to use stock parts that fit snugly to the barrel.

I'll contact Ruger soon and post my results. worse case scenario I'll sell my 10150, buy a 10149, and work backwards with a Williams surefire sight set and a some filing on the top rail.

Just buy an extra top rail and cut it down for the bottom. $25 on Amazon.

there's an idea - I wonder if the top rail has a different curve to it because of the smaller diameter of the bull barrel vs the receiver? I don't have any experience with optics or rails so I'm not sure, probably wouldn't be much of a difference anyway.

I know this might be reaching, but if anyone has a Mark III 22/45 with a top rail, would you might seeing if it would fit snugly to the bull barrel? I may just order one anyways, as the 10150 is drilled and tapped for it, but it'd help me figure out if I should order two. if not, I'll probably order one before too long and post pictures.

thanks for the suggestion

It won't be a perfect fit but, certainly much better then a flat rail. I'll take a pic when I get home tonight if I think of it.
