10/22 scope mounting

This is my first 10/22 rifle. I would like to ask if I need a low or medium height scope mount for my Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 scope. I have neither in my possession as of yet...gun awaiting my 10 day waiting period, scope is on the way being shipped.

I was recently able to work with a medium height scope, but had to move the scope slightly forward so that it did not touch the folded down rear sight. It will depend on the size of your objective lens though.

It depends on the rail you are going to mount the rings to or if you are going with a one-piece like the DNZ...

I assume you want the lowest that will clear the barrel...

Are you going to remove the factory rear leaf for extra clearance...

If you want to use lens caps you will need an additional 1/8" clearance beyond keeping the objective off the barrel...

It will help you if there is a mechanical drawing available for your scope if you haven't got it to measure it...planning for where the rings will be relative to the available straight sections might make a difference...and so will the exact specified O.D. of the objective...although that is easily estimated at 2"....

The top of the receiver is very close to .7" above the bore center line...

A Weaver T0-9 tip off rail with 1/8" rings will have plenty of clearance for a 28mm and probably enough for 33mm but not 40mm...

The same rail with 1/4" rings would probably be the lowest possible and might be too low... 3/8" rings would be a safe bet... 1/2" rings will clearance a 50mm...

MidwayUSA provides more detailed information about the rails/rings/scopes than the manufacturers and all the other retailers combined...!

Several factures.
1. what is the eye relief of you scope. In other words where must it be mounted so that when you bring the rifle up you get a clear view
2. size of the bell of the objective lens.
3. My scope had an eye relief of over 3" so the objective bell sits ahead of the iron leaf sight, in fact I can leave the leaf standing upright.
4. I the standard rail that is supplied with the rifle and Redfield medium hight.
5. whatever scope and rings you buy you should mount the scope so that it can still move back and forth. When you find the SWEET SPOT then you can tighten everything up. I do NOT use loctite on .22LR. Just check the screws each time you use it and for heavens sake use the right size screwdriver. Most now come with hex screws which makes it much easier to do this job.
Good luck and be prepared to have one hell of a lot of fun
