HIVIZ vs REFLEX RED DOT

I have been looking at putting a reflex red dot on my 22/45 . I currently have the Hiviz sights on and like them alot . The more I think about it I dont see what advantage the reflex sight would be ? It is not like it is making the target appear larger or anything . Fill me in please so I dont make a mistake by not getting one . I put the Hogue wrap around grips on the fit the 1911 goverment model, makes it feel like a champ , dramatic difference in accuracy . Thanks

Bu hi viz I assume you are still talking iron sights.

The advantage of a red dot is that it frees you up from having to line a front and rear sight and then placing both on target. Just put a single dot on the target and you're good to go. Allows for a more precise hold on the target. Most shooters find that switching to a red dot from iron sights tightens up their groups, especially us older shooters who don't see as well as we used to. As you age, it gets tougher and tougher to focus on front and rear sights.

I have red dots on some of our pistols and on some I leave as is with the iron sights. It ain't all gravy with red dots. Putting a red dot or a scope on your pistol changes the way the pistol balances and points, tremendously. Old or not, I still love shooting iron, probably because I started shooting pistol before there were red dot sights and before it became commonplace to put scopes on pistols.

I do love the hi viz sights on our new MKIII Hunter, too. Can't shoot it quite as accurately as our MK III Comp with a red dot, but the Hunter sure handles a lot sweeter and is plenty accurate with the iron sights.

thanks for the reply , one reason I love my rugers so much is they balance so well. Whoever has the RP model put the Hogue wrap aroud grips on you wont regret it .

Weight, that's the difference. I've had both and I'm back to using HI-VIZ. It's personal preference for me. Plus, my carry holster in the woods is basic, and accepts normal factory type sights only.

I recently added a Fastfire II to my 22/45 rp. I really do not think I could have made a better choice in red dots. I have also found it does not really make target aquisition any faster.(to be debated). I have 3 22/45's now, 2 with iron and 1 with above said red dot.

Do a search for a Burris speedfire ii or iii. It's $200, but a high end sight, and it's very small and light. (2 oz) you can also buy the bottom mount for it to mount on your gun instead of the rear sight, which makes it that much smaller, and also gets rid of your rail on your gun. (the bad is the mount is $50.)

Sorry buttflyzzz, missed your post! So, yeah, what he said.

By the way Overstock.com has the burris fastfireII with the mount for like 249 or so.

Or so? I just paid $259 shipped for both from optics planet (amazon), plus the Burris II deal also came with picany rail mount for $10 more. But, I thought it was still worth it. I wanted the fastfire iii, but it was $50 more, no reviews, and wasn't sure if the ruger mark iii mounts would fit it. They didn't list the mounts being compatable, although I think they were...

$259 shipped for the Burris II + picany mount + ruger mark iii mount was a good deal.

Edit to add: Overstock.com no longer has the fastfire ii or the deal...

That's not a bad deal. And you are correct, Overstock is now understocked on Burris.
