I have killed several deer with my SBH {scoped} and lots of small game with iron sights....but I have a hankering to hunt deer this fall with an iron sighted revolver. Anyone else doing it? What is your max range with the iron sights?
the right circumstances (some kind of rest and deer standing broadside) I'd say 100 yards with my 7 1/2" Redhawk with the bead and shallow v sight setup.and 50-60 yards with one of my 4 to 5" guns
I've used my .41 Blackhawk, iron sighted since I've had it, about 25 years now. I've taken deer from 30 to approx. 80 yards with it. I practice regularly at 100 yards. It's a great hunting handgun.
I'm limiting myself closer due to inexperience 35 yards freestanding, perhaps 50 if I was to be seated with a support. Only one small pig so far with revolver.
I have hunted for years with a model 29 S&W .44 mag with 8 n 3/8's barrel! It simply works for me and shoots very flat out to 100 yards with my handloads of 2400 powder and a 240 grain Sierra Hollow Cavity bullet.
The longer barrel affords better accuracy past the 25 yard mark simply put. If I can see it, I can hit it under 100 yards. It just takes practice at shooting those distances you wish to limit yourself too. I like shooting at water jugs because they let me know right away it I have hit that target. I always have lots of plastic bleach jugs around the place.
I've taken deer with iron sighted Rugers and T/C's. Usually have mine sighted in for 75yds, but have never had that long of a shot. The deer I've taken with handguns have all been at 50yds or less. Practice!!!!!!
Sgt. I see no problem using iron-sights when hunting! The only consideration is weather or not YOU can see well enough when trying to use them. I myself am now limited to 40 yards in the woods and perhaps 60 in the open fields. I like carrying a lever gun with NO scope, in the .444 cal. for deer. I have another rifle that does have the rifle scope but that increases weight and it is not as quick to shoulder, just doesn't feel as good to me when hunting.
