Hi Guys I'm new to the forum and 22 pistols I'm going to purchase a P512MKIII polymer frame or a MKIII512 is there a difference in the internal parts because I would like to upgrade the parts later I would like your opinions about the two guns. Thanks

About the only thing to improve would be the trigger pull. If your a DIY guy, use oem parts, or buy a hammer kit. Lot of info on the web about the MK III, read, read, rad.

The big question is what grip angle do you like better? I have the MKIII basic model that was such a good buy at Cabela's I couldn't say no. I usually shoot revolvers and I've had a very tough time getting used to the Luger grip angle. I have shot the 22/45 with much better results. In hindsight I wish I had just bought a 22/45 w/stainless bull barrel or one of the Buckmarks.

There's a lot of difference in parts between the polymer frame 22/45 and metal frame MK III Rugers so don't plan on using standard parts in a 22/45. The grip angle is a bunch of hype in my opinion. Once you get a decent set of grips on the standard MK III, the grip angle will be very comfortable. You can't change grips with the 22/45 because the grip frame is cast polymer with non-removable grips.

There is quite a price spread between the polymer and steel frame MK IIIs. If you can deal with the higher price, go for the KMKIII512, you won't be sorry. It's the stainless steel 5.5" bull barrel model that is drilled and tapped for a scope and includes very good adjustable sights and removable grip panels. There are a ton of after market custom parts for this gun to include: front sights, rear sights, scopes, red dots, grips, target grade triggers, "instant trigger jobs" (comes with a pre-polished hammer, sear, and springs), extended slide lock, and magazines. Some of these parts are available for the 22/45, some aren't.

Looking at Iowegian's photo, using the top grip-screw as my reference point, the "button" at the 2 o'clock position is safety; the tab at 11:00 is slide release, and the "button" at 8 o'clock is mag release? I know older models (was it even the Mark IIs) had the mag release was at the base of the mag.

Thanks,

The grip angle on the 22/45 mimics the 1911 frame. Grips can be changed with minor modification. With 1911 grip panels added to the 22/45 it has the same fit and feel as the 1911. Practice with the 22/45 has improved my 1911 scores while keeping ammo cost at a minimum.

That's impressive work, madcratebuilder.

I'd buy the Mark-III, of the choices offered.

If you want a 1911-style grip, get a Browning Buckmark which has controls and grip VERY close to a 1911. A plastic 1911 with molded grips confuses me.

If you're more ambitious and mechanically inclined, buy a Hamden or E. Hartford High Standard Sharpshooter or Supermatic "Military grip". That's even closer to a 1911 grip, but the slide release is on the opposite side and they need a little more TLC. And daaaaamn, are they sweet on the trigger. You can only get those used, of course.
